Belts of Uplands and Lowlands. Within these limits is a country consisting of alternate belts of upland and lowland, all running roughly in the same direction, from north-east to south-west. It forms part of a larger region of the same kind, which occupies the whole central part of England from the line of the Severn and Trent on the north-west to that Of the Lower Thames on the south-east.
