Taking generally, then, the Vale of Pickering as the northern boundary, and the Vale of York as the western boundary, the geological formations known to occur in this district range from the Trias to the Chalk, With the addition in places of a considerable thickness of Pleistocene and Recent deposits. These may be divided into the following three principal groups, which come to the surface over different parts of the area.
