Kelsey Ford: 10 Books That Celebrate Women’s Rights and Women’s Wrongs (0 comment)
Sure, women’s rights have come a long way over the last century, but for every step forward, it feels like we take a few back, and when that feeling is so consistent, so insidious? Man, it makes me want to support women’s wrongs. On this list, you’ll find books about women’s rights — Gloria Steinem, Barbara Ehrenreich, Mary Beard...

After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin. Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king's council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she'll serve the kingdom for three years and then be granted her freedom. Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilirating. But she's bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her... but it's the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best. Then one of the other contestants turns up dead... quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.

Review

"Readers seeking the political intrigue of Kristen Cashore's Graceling and its sequels or the deadly competition at the heart of The Hunger Games will find both in Maas's strong debut novel. . . . The verve and freshness of the narration make for a thrilling read." -- Publishers Weekly, starred review

"A teenage assassin, a rebel princess, menacing gargoyles, supernatural portals and a glass castle prove to be as thrilling as they sound. . . . Celaena is still just a teenager trying to forge her way, giving the story timelessness. This commingling of comedy, brutality and fantasy evokes a rich alternate universe with a spitfire young woman as its brightest star." -- Kirkus Reviews

"Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas is a tale full of surprises and shadows, where deadly seeds are sown with the promise of more danger to come. A fascinating glimpse into the dark side of Cinderella." -- Colleen Houck, the NYT Bestselling author of the Tigers Curse series

Synopsis

The first book in "New York Times" bestselling author Sarah J. Maas's sweeping fantasy saga - now available in hardcover with a new look to match the series

When magic has gone from the world, and a vicious king rules from his throne of glass, an assassin comes to the castle. She does not come to kill, but to win her freedom. If she can defeat twenty-three killers, thieves, and warriors in a competition to find the greatest assassin in the land, she will become the king's champion and be released from prison.

Her name is Celaena Sardothien.

The Crown Prince will provoke her. The Captain of the Guard will protect her. And a princess from a foreign land will become the one thing she never thought she'd have again: a friend. But something evil dwells in the castle-and it's there to kill. When her competitors start dying, horribly, one by one, Celaena's fight for freedom becomes a fight for survival, and a desperate quest to root out the source of the evil before it destroys her world.

When the opportunity arises to earn her freedom Celaena Sardothien takes an offer that she cannot refuse to escape her imprisonment in the deadliest prison mine. The Crown Prince of Adarlan, Dorian Havilliard, and the Captain of the Guard, Chaol Westfall propose to Celaena a challenge, to become Adarlan's Assassin to the King. Celaena takes the challenge and immediately is whisked away to the glass castle of Rifthold where the king of Adarlan is holding a competition where thieves and killers compete for the title of Adarlan's Asassin. The King has his own agenda and intent in holding these competitions, with the overall goal of being a ruler of all of Erilea, and while the plots thicken something terrible may soon be unleashed upon the land. Celaena Sardothien is a terrific heroine who has been fighting from her past for years and has faced trials no young woman should have to endure. Finding her parents murdered and being trained by thieves, Celaena is a fierce character trying to survive in a world fighting against her around every turn. After barely surviving the year in a prison mine Celaena soon finds herself entrenched in dire plots, dangerous magics and foreign affairs. As a war directed by the King of Adarlan sweeps across the globe, Celaena is finding more power in herself to fight for those who have little voice, and to fight for her own self even as she struggles to find the strength within. Throne of Glass is a beautifully written suspenseful tale of magic and power. With a great and intriguing cast of characters this story weaves through the country's history and reveals a tragic future involving the people of the world being limited and attacked by the hand of a powerful King. Celaena is a fabulous heroine that transforms herself into a weapon of power fighting for her life and to protect the people she cares about. Having given up hope, Celaena finds the power in herself to fight for what is right and for her freedom while at the same time she realizes that as much as she has tried to close her heart and feelings up, she begins to care for many of the people she is around. Crafting a strong witty heroin and a entangled plot Throne of Glass with capture readers in its story and leave them hungering for more. When you least expect it, you may find that your friends make you strong than you ever were before and give you the hope to continue in the darkest times.
