I’m a nostalgia skeptic. I say that as someone in the final days of his thirties, an age when all the normal human inclinations — pushed along by Big Culture — are driving many of us elder millennials to remember just how good things — especially products — used to be...

Through the Ganesh Gate follows Maddy Kendrick on her journey of self-discovery. Terrified of flying and in a crumbling marriage, Maddy agrees to go on a trip with her husband to treat both problems. She soon realizes that backpacker travel is no romantic picnic. Faced with the unknown, Maddy feels trapped between her dreams of freedom and her dependence on her husband. Trekking through Nepal and India brings out the best and worst of their relationship. She suddenly finds herself on her own, scared and searching for purpose. Alone and adrift, she wanders through Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos collecting wisdom from seasoned travelers along the way. Nearing the end of her itinerary and unsure if she'll ever see her husband again, she receives news that will change her life forever.

How Maddy and Richard lost their passion in just being married was a tear-jerkier. Maddy's grief from her miscarriage leads her to make the decision of traveling with her husband and remaking herself with love. Just the descriptive words Maddy uses to describe her travels in Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos are like looking at paintings that are actually alive. Richard has withdrawn from Maddy and she doesn't know why. He drinks heavily and keeps to himself. He judges Maddy for her psychological pain instead of trying to help her through it. I'm glad they decide to separate and go their own ways. This book was an emotional roller coaster ride for me personally. Maddy finds herself once again but finds people who love her too. I recommend this book to anyone who learns to love Maddy and her journey around these countries as much as I did.
