Synopsis
Excerpt from Tibet: The Country and Its Inhabitants
The book which I am now placing before the reader is a partial reprint of a work entitled A Scientific Mission to Upper Asia (paris: Leroux, 3 vols. 4to. And an atlas which I published in 1897 - 1898 under the auspices of the Ministry of Public Instruction. This government publication, important both in bulk and price, is not within the reach of the mass of readers nor, especially, of all those who may need to refer to it. I have therefore thought it advisable to extract from it and to issue in a convenient form all that part which relates to Tibet and the Tibetans, to whom recent events have called general attention. I have omitted only purely technical matters.
