Kelsey Ford: Celebrate Short Story Month: 7 Recommendations Based on 7 Collections We Love (0 comment)
I love short story collections because of how much they manage to do with so little. They can dilate, expand, shatter, constellate. Within any given collection, you can move from the moon to a diner after midnight to that liminal minute right when you wake up but are still knee-deep in a dream..

Publisher Comments

When a college graduate with a history of hapless jobs (ice cream scooper; gift wrapper; laziest ever part-time clerk at The Pet Library) reads Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Treasure Island, she is dumbstruck by the timid design of her life. When had she ever dreamed a scheme? When had she ever done a foolish, overbold act? When had she ever, like Jim Hawkins, broke from her friends, raced for the beach, stolen a boat, killed a man, and eliminated an obstacle that stood in the way of her getting a hunk of gold?

Convinced that Stevenson's book is cosmically intended for her, she redesigns her life according to its Core Values: boldness, resolution, independence and horn-blowing. Accompanied by her mother, her sister, and a hostile Amazon parrot that refuses to follow the script, our heroine embarks on a domestic adventure more frightening than anything she'd originally planned.

Treasure Island!!! is the story of a ferocious obsession, told by an original voice — intelligent, perverse, relentlessly self-extricating, and funny.

I beg to differ with this book's many reviewers. "Screamingly funny", yes, in places. But the heroine makes herself into a full-blown sociopath, stealing $1000 from a frightened old woman and eventually suffocating the pet she buys with the stolen money because she can't stand having him around. We all have anti-social feelings, and they can be devastatingly funny -- but this book rapidly gets too ugly to be funny any more. Unless you're REALLY mad at everyone, you really don't want to spend a whole evening with this woman! It's like spending the time watching someone beating OTHER people against a brick wall. (P.S. - This is the only negative Daily Dose I've ever written.)

Armed with what she believes to be the secret to life, contained within the pages of Robert Louis Stevenson's adventure classic, a young woman with a borderline personality proceeds to wreak havoc on family, friends, and a parrot named Richard. Unique, screamingly funny, heartbreaking, and incredibly fun.
