Esther Yi: The Writers That Haunt Me: Esther Yi’s Bookshelf for 'Y/N' (0 comment)
I’m haunted by a handful of writers all long dead. They set the standard; naturally I fail. Anything I read of theirs promptly enters my bloodstream, whereupon mysterious internal fomentation proceeds. Y/N is simply the latest extrusion, a concerted one...

Publisher Comments

It all starts with a school essay. When twelve-year-old Gratuity ("Tip") Tucci is assigned to write five pages on "The True Meaning of Smekday" for the National Time Capsule contest, she's not sure where to begin.

When her mom started telling everyone about the messages aliens were sending through a mole on the back of her neck?
Maybe on Christmas Eve, when huge, bizarre spaceships descended on the Earth and the aliens — called Boov — abducted her mother?
Or when the Boov declared Earth a colony, renamed it "Smekland" (in honor of glorious Captain Smek), and forced all Americans to relocate to Florida via rocketpod?

In any case, Gratuity's story is much, much bigger than the assignment. It involves her unlikely friendship with a renegade Boov mechanic named J.Lo.; a futile journey south to find Gratuity's mother at the Happy Mouse Kingdom; a cross-country road trip in a hovercar called Slushious; and an outrageous plan to save the Earth from yet another alien invasion.

Fully illustrated with "photos," drawings, newspaper clippings, and comics sequences, this is a hilarious, perceptive, genre-bending novel by a remarkable new talent.

Synopsis

About the Author

Adam Rex grew up in Phoenix, Arizona, the middle of three children. He was neither the smart one (older brother) or the cute one (younger sister), but he was the one who could draw. He took a lot of art classes as a kid, trying to learn to draw better, and started painting when he was 11. Later he got a BFA from the University of Arizona, and met his physicist wife, Marie (who is both the smart and cute one)....

He likes animals, spacemen, Mexican food, Ethiopian food, monsters, puppets, comic books, 19th-century art, skeletons, bugs, and robots. His first picture book, The Dirty Cowboy by Amy Timberlake, was published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux in 2003. His picture book Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich, a collection of stories about monsters and their problems, was a New York Times bestseller. The year 2007 saw the release of his first novel, The True Meaning of Smekday. His second, a book for teens and adults called Fat Vampire, will be published in July 2010. Garlic and crosses are useless against Adam. Sunlight has been shown to be at least moderately effective. A silver bullet does the trick. Pretty much any bullet, really.

I had no idea this book would be so good. While it reads more as a kids book (so does Harry Potter) I thought it was a cute and clever adventure. It may take a while to get there at times but the drawings, commentary and colonization, and humor are all on point in this book. I suppose my only complaint is that while the book touches on race and land colonization it doesn't drive the point home with the parallels that the book lays out so neatly. (Also the whole 'you were looking for a white woman?' plot is never really discussed) I was also impressed that for a book directed to a younger audience there's good character development that keeps the plot moving pretty quickly. Sure not everything gets explained but the story ends up where it needs to. Overall there are some memorable characters and lots of humor in the book in a way that makes it an easy and fun read.

This book has been my favorite book in the world since I got it for Hannukah in 3rd grade. It is hilarious and beautiful and interesting and the world would be a better place if everyone read it. There is a movie coming out about it, but judging from the preview it looks entirely different. Please read this book and pass it on.

I read this book when it was just out, and immediately read it to my two boys. I often think about it, and it still brings a grin when some of the more unfortunate (actual) current events are being discussed ( the boov "genesis" comic book and the literal translation of the alien phrase for "casino" come instantly to mind.)The puns, the visuals and the commentary are rich materials for any adult, and the story line, the Boov, and the heroine are heaven for kids- mine were 10 and thirteen at the reading and it still comes up in both of their conversation four years later. (ASIDE TO POWELL'S STAFF: the product info is wrong, I have the book in my hand, dated 2007, as well as the new york times book review of same dated Nov.11 of that year)
