Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Candace Robb?s A Trust Betrayed is set in late-13th-century Scotland during the Wars of Independence with a 20-year-old female protagonist, Margaret Kerr. Margaret goes off to Edinburgh to search for her husband Roger, missing for several months, and to find the killer of his cousin, Jack. The city is awash in English soldiers as King Edward of England is pressing for power against the different claimants to the Scottish throne. The book isn't as satisfying as the author's Owen Archer novels. The characters haven?t fully developed yet. It has some interesting elements such as the mystic prophecies of Margaret's mother?who we never actually meet. In fact, it was obviously written as the first in a series since the prophecies are left unresolved. Margaret's youth and inexperience also come into play as she interacts with various city-folk, never quite knowing who to trust. Robb?s trademark research is evident in the details of life in medieval Edinburgh. I hope in future additions we will see Margaret become more astute as she matures and that Robb will more fully develop supporting players.
