I LOVED this book as a child am am thrilled to have found it again as an adult. It is about a boy who explores some caves in Cornwall and gets transported to a fantastic world beneath the seas called Egon. The author's writing style was able to conjure up vivid images of this world when I first read the book in 1981. I am pleased to note that even as a jaded, unimaginative adult, I was still transported to the world of Egon. The ending was a source of sadness and frustration for me as a child and still is. The main character has problems functioning in life once he gets back to our world .
I will definitely be reading this to my kids when they are old enough. It was one of my favourite books as a child - along with Tom's Midnight Garden, Charlotte Sometimes and Playing Beatie Bow - and I hope it will be one of theirs too.
