Harper C.: Five Book Friday: Uncanny Graphic Novels (0 comment)
We are in the thick of winter here in the Pacific Northwest, which means it's dark, damp, and chilly. Rather than escaping to stories with warmer, brighter climates, I personally want nothing more than to dive deep into gothic and uncanny fiction as the wind rattles my windows at night...

This garden is on the move! A good-time, rollicking celebration of things that grow.

PEPPERS GROW UP.

POTATOES GROW DOWN.

PUMPKINS VINE AROUND AND AROUND.

From seeds dropping into soil to corn bursting from its stalks, from children chasing butterflies to ants burrowing underground, everything in this vibrant picture book pulses with life — in all directions! Sprightly illustrations set the mood for a rhythmic text that follows natures course to a final feast of backyard bounty.

Synopsis

In a rollicking celebration of things that grow, a garden teeming with life produces a variety of edible plants, such as corn that grows up, onions that grow down, and tomato vines that twine all around.

My two kids (2 and 5) LOVE this book. We got it from the library and read it so many times I have decided to buy it and send copies to my brothers. The kids like it because of the pictures (lots of "find the worm, find the bird, find the dog") and can repeat the rhymes along with me. I like it because it is funny.

This is Pennsylvania's One Book, One Child book for the year, so I've been trying to incorporate it into storytime. It's kind of a boring book to read out loud, though, at least to large groups; I could see it working better one-on-one. The illustrations are exuberant and the use of a vegetable garden to illustrate the concepts of "up," "down," and "around" is clever, but the kids seemed bored.
