Harper C.: Five Book Friday: Uncanny Graphic Novels (0 comment)
We are in the thick of winter here in the Pacific Northwest, which means it's dark, damp, and chilly. Rather than escaping to stories with warmer, brighter climates, I personally want nothing more than to dive deep into gothic and uncanny fiction as the wind rattles my windows at night...

Though he may not speak of them, the memories still dwell inside Jacob Jankowski's ninety-something-year-old mind. Memories of himself as a young man, tossed by fate onto a rickety train that was home to the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. Memories of a world filled with freaks and clowns, with wonder and pain and anger and passion; a world with its own narrow, irrational rules, its own way of life, and its own way of death. The world of the circus: to Jacob it was both salvation and a living hell.

Jacob was there because his luck had run out--orphaned and penniless, he had no direction until he landed on this locomotive "ship of fools." It was the early part of the Great Depression, and everyone in this third-rate circus was lucky to have any job at all. Marlena, the star of the equestrian act, was there because she fell in love with the wrong man, a handsome circus boss with a wide mean streak. And Rosie the elephant was there because she was the great gray hope, the new act that was going to be the salvation of the circus; the only problem was, Rosie didn't have an act--in fact, she couldn't even follow instructions. The bond that grew among this unlikely trio was one of love and trust, and ultimately, it was their only hope for survival.

Surprising, poignant, and funny, Water for Elephants is that rare novel with a story so engrossing, one is reluctant to put it down; with characters so engaging, they continue to live long after the last page has been turned; with a world built of wonder, a world so real, one starts to breathe its air.

Review

"With a showman's expert timing, [Gruen] saves a terrific revelation for the final pages, transforming a glimpse of Americana into an enchanting escapist fairy tale." New York Times Book Review

Review

"Gruen has done her homework...lively with historical detail and unexpected turns....[A] delightful gem springing from a fascinating footnote to history that absolutely deserved to be mined." Denver Post

Review

"One of the many pleasures of this novel is the opportunity to enter a bizarrely coded and private world with its own laws, superstitions and vocabulary....The pleasures of that world were so compelling, so detailed and vivid, that I couldn't bear to be torn away from it for a single minute." Chicago Tribune

Review

"Jankowski is waiting for the circus to come to town, and what happens when it finally arrives provides the book's punch line. Gruen's sympathy for this character and for the aging process in general is her strongest suit." Minneapolis Star Tribune

Review

"Gruen sketches out character, events and the circus' special lingo with well-chosen words....She keeps the story moving like a speeding train." Charlotte Observer

Review

"Old-fashioned and endearing, this is an enjoyable, fast-paced story." Library Journal

Review

"The leisurely recreation of the circus's daily routine is lovely and mesmerizing." Kirkus Reviews

Review

"[T]he magic of the story and the writing convince you to suspend your disbelief. The book is partially based on real circus stories and illustrated with historical circus photographs." Booklist

Review

"The circus, the Great Depression, a complex elephant, equally complex love, the mists and twists of memory articulated in the utterly winning voice of a very old man who's seen it all: these are the irresistible elements of Water for Elephants. Sara Gruen has written an utterly transporting novel richly full of the stuff of life." Robert Olen Butler, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain

Review

"Gorgeous, brilliant, and superbly plotted, Water for Elephants swept me into the world of the circus during the Depression, and it did not let me go until the very end. I don't think it has let me go, even now. Sara Gruen has a voice to rival John Irving's and I am hopelessly, unabashedly in love with this book. Read it." Joshilyn Jackson, author of Gods in Alabama

Review

"[A] well-researched adventure into the weird and charming universe of the Depression-era circus....If you are expecting a quick, straightforward story that still manages to give your imagination a meat-and-potatoes meal worthy of the circus cookhouse, Water for Elephants is an excellent candidate." Portland Oregonian

Jacob Janowski s luck had run out orphaned and penniless, he had no direction until he landed on a rickety train that was home to the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. And he met Rosie, an untrainable elephant who was the great hope for this third-rate traveling show. The bond that grew among this group of misfits was one of love and trust, and ultimately, it was their only hope for survival."

Synopsis

An atmospheric, gritty, and compelling novel of star-crossed lovers, set in the circus world circa 1932, by the bestselling author of Riding Lessons.

When Jacob Jankowski, recently orphaned and suddenly adrift, jumps onto a passing train, he enters a world of freaks, grifters, and misfits, a second-rate circus struggling to survive during the Great Depression, making one-night stands in town after endless town. A veterinary student who almost earned his degree, Jacob is put in charge of caring for the circus menagerie. It is there that he meets Marlena, the beautiful young star of the equestrian act, who is married to August, the charismatic but twisted animal trainer. He also meets Rosie, an elephant who seems untrainable until he discovers a way to reach her.

Beautifully written, Water for Elephants is illuminated by a wonderful sense of time and place. It tells a story of a love between two people that overcomes incredible odds in a world in which even love is a luxury that few can afford.

I really don't know why I enjoyed this so much but it was wonderful. Sometimes I got really mad at the main character and sometimes I was sad. I do only have a few favorites and this one has made it into my list. It really isn't about Circus but the back drop for the book. I encourage you to try it out.

This was one of the most enjoyable books I've read in a long time. It had everything I love in a book; drama, love, mystery, adventure, tragedy, warmth, and humor. I loved the author's style of writing as well. Her characters are wonderfully complex and memorable, and I found myself becoming completely wrapped up in them. I had a very hard time putting this book down.

Great book, researched well, and unexpected. I resisted for a long time, but thoroughly enjoyed every minute! A quick read over the holidays. It will make you laugh and cry. The characters can be identified with and seem real. Great job, Ms. Gruen!

This book was such a surprise for me. It was recommended to me by a co-worker who thought I would absolutely love it and to be honest at first I was a bit skeptical. But once I started reading Water for Elephants I could not put it down. I do have a soft spot for the elderly so I'm sure that played a role in my interest for this book. Overall it really impressed me and I automatically became a Sara Gruen fan. I think everyone should read this book even if you don't love it like I did, you will appreciate that this book is very well written and has an uncommon yet incredibly interesting story to tell.

Water for Elephants was a book that I couldn't put down. This story opens up the history of the travelling circus from the prospective of a young man struck by tragedy and looking for a new life. I really loved the perspective of the character, Jacob Jankowski, as an old man looking back at his life in the circus. I enjoyed this book and recommend it to all animal lovers!

This riveting work of fiction is even more important due to the "discussion" of animal rights that's just beneath the story line. Gruen's best, I think.

Really amazing book that takes fiction to a new level. It reads like an amazing fairytale for adults. The author does an amazing job of making everything seem authentic. Her ability to describe location/events makes the book come alive off the page and I know that I could barely put it down. It is more than a good story though, her references to aging and the meaning of life are thought provoking and for me, encouraging! It was a feel good read that made me feel like a kid again. I HIGHLY recommend the book especially if you want something low key but still moving.

The best book of the year. Deserves to be made into a movie...which, I believe it is!

A quick and enjoyable read, with colorful characters, a great plot, interesting villains and an unusual love story. I enjoyed the way the story was narrated by the same man at very different times in his life (as a naive virgin in his 20s and as an irascible old guy in his 90s). The book also presented some interesting detail about Depression-era life in the United States. The ending is quite satisfying, which is a nice change. A lot of new literary fiction doesn’t deliver in that department for fear of being too predictable or not “artsy” enough.

It is a subtle story that is well written. I think it will be a much under appreciated book due to the fact that it doesn't conform with most readers choice of books, but it is a solid story from a wonderfully worded author.

Loved the book and our book club is discussing it tonight. As for the question by one reader: what is the significance of the title? Good question, and I pondered that myself. I came up with this: water for elephants is a necessity and a kindness. Extend that to a metaphor for human interaction as well as human/animal interaction -- we all need the "water" of love and caring. Sara Gruen, what do you think of that?

This book covers many topics--life in the time of the Great Depression, life inside the Big Top,life in a nursing home, early dementia, and of course, a sweet love story. I was especially taken with the love of animals by the story-teller. When he described the Orangutan, with her lovely long eye-lashes and beautiful hair, it was as if he described a beautiful woman. His love for the elephant was endearing and, of course, pivotal to the story. At one point the circus visits my home town of Keokuk, Iowa, which was fun! I have never read Sara Gruen before, but will not hesitate to jump into any and all!

This book is a free-flowing page turner. It is filled with all the elements of a classic "good read": Major life-changing disaster, strange twist on the road of life, love, lust, fistacuffs, freaks, bad men, good men, an historical background and animals (who can resist a dumb[?] Polish "speaking" elephant? Very few books would I ever suggest be made into a movie. This one has what it takes. I think if this book does not make it into a screenwriter's hands, someone is missing out on a sure winner.

When I saw the reviews for this book I was tempted to read it but did not do so because I thought "I don't care about circus books!" But, I kept seeing it reviewed favorably and then a friend recommended it (we give each other tips on books so she knows my tastes) and I said "Ok, I'll try." WELL!!!! I am so glad I did. It is NOT a circus book. It is a book about personal journey, growing up, life and death, poverty and riches, new and old. It is a fascinating tale, sweet and funny and sad and loving and tender and intelligent . . . I think it would make a wonderful movie too!

Alternating between present and past, the crotchety elderly narrator tells the story of his depression era career in the circus. It?s a fast, entertaining read from start to finish. For those seeking romance there?s an intense love story. For those seeking psychological insight, it?s a quality that abounds in the details of both today and yesteryear. The human/animal connection is beautifully rendered, especially through the tale of the Polish-speaking pachyderm, Rosie. The writing is touching, perceptive, and deeply comic. The ending comes as a wonderful imaginative surprise after such a factual depiction of life in the circus and the old folk?s home.

Excellent book! One of the few books that was so good and interesting that I would go back and read it again. Told from the perspective (I'm not ruining anything here) from a old man looking back on his life.
