This novel, Clancy's first, has all the makings of an American classic. The story includes some truly heart-pounding moments, yet the thematic heft of the book's main theme (a warning against the dangers of a mercenary military and the ongoing privatization of institutions that were once, and ought to remain, state-run) elevates its status to something truly important. Powerful and timely.
