Harper C.: Five Book Friday: Uncanny Graphic Novels (0 comment)
We are in the thick of winter here in the Pacific Northwest, which means it's dark, damp, and chilly. Rather than escaping to stories with warmer, brighter climates, I personally want nothing more than to dive deep into gothic and uncanny fiction as the wind rattles my windows at night...

Anyanwu is a shapeshifting woman who embodies love and healing, and Doro is a feared man who destroys those who oppose him or are no longer useful to him. Octavia E. Butler uses these two immortal characters to make you question everything you've learned about love, family, hatred, and power. This is by far the most intriguing science fiction novel I have ever read, and I was unable to put it down the first time I read it! Luckily, it is the prequel to a series called Patternist.  Recommended By Kirsten N., Powells.com

Publisher Comments

Doro is an entity who changes bodies like clothes, killing his hosts by reflex -- or design. He fears no one -- until he meets Anyanwu. Anyanwu is a shapeshifter who can absorb bullets and heal with a kiss...and savage anyone who threatens those she loves. She fears no one -- until she meets Doro. From African jungles to the colonies of America, Doro and Anyanwu weave together a pattern of destiny that not even immortals can imagine.

I was only recently introduced to the writings of Octavia Butler, and thus began my mission to get my hands on any of her writing I could. This book is simply amazing, it is speculative fiction without being unbelievable, and the writing and story make it a really difficult book to put down! This is the first book in a series called the Patternist, that means if you love it half as much as I did, you will be elated to discover the story doesn't have to end with this book! You will want to pick up Mind of My Mind before you let yourself get too far through this book so that the amazing world Octavia Butler creates for us can continue to be explored delicious page after page.
