Powell's Staff: New Literature in Translation: June 2022 (0 comment)
June is one of my favorite months, especially here in Portland, where the weather can be beautiful and sunny one minute and a gray downpour with threats of thunder the next. It’s important to always be prepared to take advantage of those rainy afternoons, with a good mug of tea and a great book. Below, we’ve rounded up some of the books in translation released this past month....

Ever since Prue McKeel returned home from the Impassable Wilderness after rescuing her brother from the malevolent Dowager Governess, life has been pretty dull. School holds no interest for her, and her new science teacher keeps getting on her case about her dismal test scores and daydreaming in class. Her mind is constantly returning to the verdant groves and sky-tall trees of Wildwood, where her friend Curtis still remains as a bandit-in-training.

But all is not well in that world. A hard winter has come and discord reigns in the wake of the so-called Bicycle Coup. Dark assassins with mysterious motives conspire to settle the scores of an unknown client. A titan of industry employs inmates from his orphanage to work in his machine shop, all the while obsessing over the exploitation of the Impassable Wilderness. Under a growing threat, Prue is drawn back into Wildwood, where she and Curtis will face their greatest challenge yet: to save themselves and the lives of their friends, and to bring unity to a divided country. But in order to do that, they must go under Wildwood.

In Under Wildwood, Colin Meloy and Carson Ellis reveal new dimensions of the epic fantasy-adventure series begun with the critically acclaimed, bestselling Wildwood.

Review

"Droll and ornate, elegiac and romantic — the sequel to Wildwood (2011) brings readers deeper into and under the pine-scented, magical world tantalizingly close to Portland, Ore....The incomparable Ellis more than rises to the challenge — her sly, wistful, abundant illustrations provide an emotional through line." Kirkus Reviews

About the Author

Colin Meloy once wrote Ray Bradbury a letter, informing him that he "considered himself an author too." He was ten. Since then, Colin has gone on to be the singer and songwriter for the band the Decemberists, where he channels all of his weird ideas into weird songs. With the Wildwood Chronicles, he is now channeling those ideas into novels.

As a kid, Carson Ellis loved exploring the woods, drawing, and nursing wounded animals back to health. As an adult, little has changed — except she is now the acclaimed illustrator of several books for children, including Lemony Snicket's The Composer is Dead, Dillweed's Revenge by Florence Parry Heide, and The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart.

Colin and Carson live with their son, Hank, in Portland, Oregon, quite near the Impassable Wilderness.

Loved the first book in the series and was thrilled to see the story continued in a second book. Having grown up and lived most of my life in Portland added greatly to the appeal of this book. The story fit in wonderfully with all the old tales and myths of Forest Park and the West Hills....some of my old haunts. The writing took me back to those days of hiking through various parts of the park and the other forested areas of the west side....and that feeling that you were often being watched. The descriptions and name given to the St. John's Bridge bring back those great images of the bridge almost disappering on foggy days. And then there is the pure magic of the Pittock Mansion. The characters really brought this book to life for me. The artwork is delightful. I definitely hope this book is also printed a special addition like the first book was. I would definitely buy it.

One the most fantastical stories of 2012 and my vote for the Puddly Award! Colin and Carson created a wonderfully bewitching world with Under Wildwood that I happily escaped to night after night. I love the Wildwood series and cannot wait for the next amazing adventure!

The Wildwood Chronicles are the only ~YA books I've read in years. I wish there had been a series such as fascinating and engaging as this when I was a kid (though, I was a pretty big Hank the Cowdog fan). Under Wildwood proved to be an excellent follow-up to the 1st.

This was by far the best book I read in 2012. It was whimsical and suspenseful. I loved reading a fantasy story that takes place in the town I call home. Portland Oregon. I highly recommend the Wild Wood chronicles.

I've been a fan of The Decemberists for years, as well as the artwork of Carson Ellis and the first Wildwood book pretty much made my fiction dreams come true. I didn't think that Colin Meloy could top the first book and yet Under Wildwood was beyond my wildest dreams. This book was the perfect combination of folklore, fantasy, and myth combined with real-world situations that would appeal to both adults and children alike. I can't wait to read this series aloud to my children.

Every bit as charming as the first. We get a lot more character development in this book. Maybe not as much action as the first, but by no means boring. Newly introduced characters also raise questions. A good read, for anyone really. I'd also like to say that I found the ending very well done - a three-way cliff hanger that was masterfully done. Can't wait for the third.

I first read the Wildwood..."classic" on my spanking new IPAD and I was transported once again as a child--- that familiar world we once knew when we were in 4th grade. Why has it left us? I am so excited that there is a next turn to this adventure and am ready with black frames and hot chocolate to go back to Wildwood. Being an illustrator, I am in a comfort zone of excitement and rich words that come off the page! I look forward to a hardcopy--- just a signature? please draw a fox in uniform!

I'm so excited for Under Wildwood! I have a signed copy of the first book from the Powell's pre-order and I'm glad they're doing that again so I can continue the tradition! I'm also looking forward to it because it's just a perfect autumn read to curl up with.

I cannot wait for this book to come out. The first book has inspired me again and again to continue writing my own children/young adult low fantasy novel, and I can only hope that this one will do the same.
