Wolf Of Gubbio

A giant wolf prowls the forest outside of Gubbio, no one dares leave the walled town unless they are traveling armed and in groups. One day, a band of barefoot, coarse-robed strangers comes to town. Their leader is the Poverello, a man who is said to understand the language of the animals and to work miracles.

Against the warnings of the people, the Poverello goes to confront the wolf. He sees that it is the wolf's hunger that drives him to kill, and so he offers the beast a deal. The townsfolk will feed the wolf, and in return the animal will harm no living creature.

Based on one of the legends of St. Francis of Assisi, the story may contain some truth. During the repairs to a chapel in Gubbio dedicated to the saint, a large wolf's skull was found underneath the flagstones.
