Powell's Staff: New Literature in Translation: December 2022 and January 2023 (0 comment)
It may be a new year, this may be a list of new books, but our love for literature in translation hasn’t changed at all, and we are so pleased to be enthusiastically recommending these recent releases. On this list, you’ll find a Spanish novel where controversy swirls around a Coca-Cola billboard...

Synopsis

Forced to Spy for Grave Robbers
True Colors - Fiction Based on Strange-But-True History

In 1824, Josephine Clayton is considered dead by everyone in her Massachusetts village--especially the doctor she gas assisted for several months. Yet, she is still very much alive.

After the doctor's illegal dealing with his body snatcher to obtain her body, Josephine awakens, positioned as the next corpse for his research. To cover up his crime, the doctor tries to kill her, but Josephine begs to be spared. They strike a deal--Josephine will leave her village and work at a distant cotton mill. All the while, she'll await her true mission--posing as a mourner to help the body snatcher procure her replacement.

At the mill though, Josephine is praised for her medical remedies among the other female workers, gaining attention from the handsome factory manager, Braham Taylor. Yet, when Braham's own loved one becomes the prey for the next grave robbing, Josie must make a choice that could put her dark past behind her or steal away the promise of any future at all.

What price will Josie pay for love when her secrets begin to unravel?

Sometimes truth IS much stranger than fiction... To be perfectly honest, I picked up The Yellow Lantern because it was part of the True Colors series and I had absolutely no idea what it was about. I hadn't even read the back cover blurb on my copy when I started reading. Boy, was I in for a shock right off the bat. Seriously! Right there on the first page the heroine wakes up after having been presumed dead and actually buried! Trust me, Angie Dicken knows how to hook her readers right from the start and keep them good and hooked. I thought it a bit ironic that this book is about grave robbers and just a few days ago I was watching a short youtube biography/documentary about two real people convicted of just that offense. Weird, right? Anyway, The Yellow Lantern is an excellent addition to the True Colors series and I enjoyed it very much. It's deliciously dark and morbid in places. Manipulation, fear, betrayal, greed, and murder all have their places. But there is also a strong thread of hope, through faith, through the love in friendship and the love in romance. Angie Dicken has nicely packaged all of these threads in an entertaining and riveting story with roots in real events from history. Definitely a book that I would recommend... (I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)

Anne Rightler , August 16, 2019 (view all comments by Anne Rightler)
The Yellow Lantern by Angie Dicken is part of the True Colors series which are fictional stories based on true American crime. The author drew me in immediately as in the first few pages she describes the near-death experience of a young woman thought to be dead. Set in a small Massachusetts village during the early 1820s, the book tells the story of a woman caught in a dreadful and wicked web of deceit and grave-robbing. Death had led Josie and her father down a dark path into the hands of dangerous and ruthless individuals. Would the nightmare ever end and justice prevail? Would her passion for healing lead to her purpose in life or would evil thwart her destiny? The author brings an exciting edge-of-the-seat climax to this historical fiction account of the illegal practice of body-snatching. The characters are realistic and either likable, relatable, or despicable. Dialogue flowed seamlessly without sounding forced. I had a hard time putting the book down. The story pulls on the reader’s emotions, shock and horror, anger and revenge, sorrow and compassion. It is a book that kept my interest and I look forward to reading more from this author. I received a complimentary copy of this book via Barbour Publishing and CelebrateLit. A favorable review was not required and opinions are my own.

The Yellow Lantern is set in the Northeast in the early 1800s. Against her will, Josephine Clayton was drug into a network of body snatchers by her father and his farmhand. She was made to believe that her participation was the only way to protect her father, the only parent she had left. As part of her role, Josephine became Josie Clay and was hired on at the Gloughton Mill, a place where accidents often happened and could lead to death. No one could have predicted her growing attachment to the mill's manager, Braham Taylor, and his foster aunt, Mrytle Bates. Josie was torn between her loyalty to her father, her loyalty to God, and her growing affection for Braham and Aunt Myrtle. While she herself an herbalist was involved in the healing arts, using stolen bodies for medical research was repugnant to her. A way out of her predicament was elusive. It took me awhile to get into this story, but once I did, I was hooked. I recommend the book with its unique story line and well-written dialogue to fans of suspense and historical fiction. I am grateful to Barbour Publishing for providing me with a copy of The Yellow Lantern via NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion. I was under no obligation to provide a positive review and received no monetary compensation.

I requested, through Netgalley and Barbour Books, to read and review The Yellow Lantern by Angie Dicken. I was given an advanced reader ebook to do this. My opinions are my own and not required. I have read the previous books in this series and enjoyed them. Each one by a different author. I was hoping I would feel the same about this book, but I do not. The concept is intriguing and has a lot of promise, but this book fell flat. It started strong but soon weakened to a slow, slightly boring read. I was totally confused on the main male characters relationship with his uncle. I never really knew if it was his biological uncle or just a kind person. Braham's, the nephew's, background was told but not in a clear manner and not one that made any sense. I don't see a real family treating one another as this was. The main female character was a bit more interesting but still fell flat. She seemed to be the only one that reflected a Christian personality and that wasn't very strong. They all attended church but that seemed to be the main thing that made this a Christian book and it was disappointing. This book had a lot of potential and the history would have been interesting. I am sorry the history part was so weak also. I have not read any other book by Angie Dicken so I cannot comment or compare. I am not sure I will read more if they are like this one. I also hope that the editing is done better before going to market as there was a lot to be desired in that area. I will not recommend this book to my friends. I give this book 3 out of 5 stars.
