Review

"A really good flash fiction is like a story overheard at a bar — personal, funny, dangerous, and sometimes hard to believe. You Have Time For This distills those qualities and many others into quick tall tales by writers who are as talented as they are magical." Kevin Sampsell, author of Beautiful Blemish

Review

"These contenders for the title of 'world's best short-short stories' are by some of the best micro and flash writers I know of." Robert Shapard, co-editor of New Sudden Fiction and Flash Fiction Forward

You Have Time For This is a fascinating mix of flash fiction stories. In spite of the 500 word restriction - no story runs longer than a mere two-page spread - these are fully formed stories, not just sketches. The authors consistently manage to tug the heartstrings, pique the curiosity, and twist the knife with the same precision as if they had an entire novel in which to build up the story. A short disclaimer, however: because of their brevity and intensity, I can't recommend treating the slim volume as you would a cohesive book. While only the length of a bite, each story is a full course in itself. Allow yourself a moment to digest what you read before turning the page.

"You Have Time For This" the book said--and I did! Between the constant crush of tasks, life hasn't left me with much time for reading. But this little book gave me stories that only took up a page or two of space and a moment to read and digest. Not only that, they lingered! I've found myself flipping back through this book, returning to my favorites. If there was a good way to describe these stories, it would be by comparing them to haiku: they're short, sweet, and to the point while still feeling like they're filled with meaning and heft. So much is said in so little. A great book for a person on the go.

This collection of flash fiction--bare bone stories no more than five hundred words each--includes a wide variety of stories that, despite their brevity, have a complete beginning, middle, and end. The stories include (among others): the thoughts of two people who meet in an airplane; an unappreciative husband's karma catching up with him; a divorced couple dining out at a Chinese restaurant; and a mentally unhinged and jealous victim of unrequited love. Oh, yes, there's a bizarre science fiction story involving characters who are experiencing a disturbing metamorphosis...but I recommend that you take the time to read the book yourself.

You Have Time for This is a collection of short stories rich in character and imagination. There's a wide variety of styles and voices, so there's something there for everyone. Full of wit, humor, and drama, these stories accomplish more in a few hundred words than most novels do in a few hundred pages!
