We now offer free store pickup at Powell's City of Books, Powell's at Cedar Hills Crossing, and Powell's Books on Hawthorne! Here's how to take advantage of this service:
1. Shop on Powells.com.
Browse our website and add items to your shopping cart as you would for a regular online order.
Tip: To get your items faster, select products that show in-store availability.
2. Choose Store Pickup.
At checkout after you have logged in, select Store Pickup and the pickup location on the Shipping Details page. Pickups at our Cedar Hills Crossing and Hawthorne locations occur inside the store during open hours.
3. Place your order and wait for us to notify you.
When your order is ready, we’ll email you with a link to select a half-hour time slot for pickup. Please do not attempt to pick up your order ahead of your scheduled time.
4. Come get your books!
During your pickup window, stop by our store:
Downtown: 11th Ave. and Couch St. entrance
Cedar Hills Crossing: inside the front entrance at 3415 SW Cedar Hills Blvd. between Ulta and Tuesday Morning
Hawthorne: inside the main entrance at 3723 SE Hawthorne Blvd.
When you arrive, tap the "Bring me my order" email link on your phone.

What are you doing to ensure the safety of customers and employees?
At our Burnside location, we've designed the pickup process to be completely contactless and to take place outside of the store. When you arrive at our store entrance, you will notify us by tapping an email link on your smartphone. You will then show us your phone through the window so we can see the order number. We will retrieve your order and leave it on a table at the entrance.
At all of our locations, line signage will clearly identify where you should stand at each step of the process. Should more than one person arrive at the same time, we will have markers indicating where you should line up so that you are safely distanced.
Regarding safety in our workplace, we continue to follow the latest guidelines from health authorities. We provide ample hand-washing facilities and hand sanitizer, gloves, and masks for all employees, and we train all employees on best practices related to protective gear, supplies, and general hygiene. Frequently touched surfaces are regularly cleaned and disinfected and we have adjusted work stations, work flow, scheduling, protocols, traffic patterns, and break areas to allow for social distancing. We have also adjusted our policies to ensure employees stay home if they are sick or have virus-related concerns.
I don’t have a smartphone. Can I still take advantage of contactless store pickup at Burnside?
Yes! Once we’ve emailed you that your order is ready, you've scheduled your pickup time, and you're getting ready to pick up your order, please write down your order number and email address clearly on a piece of paper. When you arrive at the store, proceed directly to Spot 1 and hold the paper up to the window so an employee can read the information.
Can I choose items that are not available at the store where I'm picking up my order?
Yes. Items in stock at other store locations can be transferred and held for you. This generally takes 2-4 days. Please be aware that items sourcing from our partner warehouses can take up to 2 weeks to arrive and may be delayed further due to shipping carrier disruptions.
What if I miss my scheduled pickup time?
No problem. Your order will be held for you for eight days after it is ready. Just click the "Select a Pickup Time" link in your email again to schedule a new pickup.
If you are unable to pick up your order after eight days from the time we notified you that your order was ready, we will ship it to the address on file (shipping rates apply). If the address on file isn’t local to Oregon or Washington, or if we are unable to process the shipping charge, we will refund the order and restock the product to our inventory.
Can I place a store pickup order by phone?
Not at this time. An email address and mobile phone are necessary to receive notifications and complete your order.
Can I make changes to my order after I have placed it online?
You may cancel your order if it is still being processed by logging into your Powell's account and going to Status of Current Orders.
Unfortunately we cannot accommodate other order changes, such as adding items, once your order has been placed.
Can I make changes to my order when I’m picking it up?
We're sorry, but to ensure safe distancing and a speedy pickup process, we cannot make order changes at the time of pickup.
