I like to think that a big part of my job is giving people good news. The good news is usually that cool books are on their way. This is especially true this year, with a blockbuster set of fall releases hitting the stores on a weekly basis. But not all of the news is good.
These are uncertain times, and one of the big results, and thereafter causes, of all this uncertainty is the supply chain. Every retailer you have contact with this season will have struggles stemming from the disruptions, blockages, delays, and shortages that are plaguing the flow of goods. And books are both good
and goods.
So, here is a moment when you can avoid those disruptions by claiming your piece of the holiday bookscape now. Many, many books will sell out of their initial printing and very few of those titles will be reprinted and make it back into stores this year. Here is a list of forthcoming titles that I think will make great presents, but once they’re gone, it will be some time before we see their kind again.
Note: I avoided titles from our
Picks of the Season and
What I'm Giving lists, but those are additional great choices. Good news: there are so many cool books!
Cooking at Home
by David Chang
David Chang is a chef who, like the rest of us, did a lot more home cooking this year. And he was reminded that the way his mother cooked — improvisational and quick — is a lot more fun. This book is full of tips and tricks to have a better time and get better results for your home-cooked feasts.
Rise and Run
by Shalane Flanagan and Elyse Kopecky
If someone on your list is a serious runner, you’ve probably already heard their theories about breakfast. How you start your day affects everything, not just your workout. Four-time Olympian Shalane Flanagan and Elyse Kopecky have put together the information and recipes that any athlete needs to maintain a well-nourished and sustainable routine.
The Lord of the Rings Illustrated Edition
by J. R. R. Tolkien
This super fancy edition of the touchstone series is written and illustrated by J. R. R. Tolkien. Full of attention to detail and craft, this is a precious book that will be highly sought after. So maybe get two?
The Lyrics
by Paul McCartney
Another super fancy book celebrating a revered creator. Here are all of Sir Paul’s lyrics along with his own images and commentaries. It comes as two slip-cased volumes, so maybe get four?
The Least of Us
by Sam Quinones
The follow-up to his essential book on the opioid crisis, Dreamland, Sam Quinones continues his dogged reporting and uncovers more tragedies, but also signs of resilience and hope. A great choice for the serious nonfiction reader you’re shopping for.
My Name’s Yours, What’s Alaska?
by Alaska Thunderfuck 5000
There have been enough seasons of RuPaul’s Drag Race that it’s probably not worth the effort to pick one all-time best contestant. But Alaska would surely be on any shortlist. Her book is just as smart, absurd, and fierce as she is. If you’re getting this as a gift, please wrap it in leopard print.
Celebrate With Kim-Joy
by Kim-Joy
Another standout contestant from a beloved competition, The Great British Baking Show’s Kim-Joy will make your holiday more delightful, with or without the edible space turtles.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: The Deluxe Hardcover
by Quentin Tarantino
Quentin Tarantino’s novelization of his own screenplay was put out earlier this year as a mass market paperback, but this hardcover edition is much more giftable, and comes with great extras like a full script for an episode of Bounty Law.
Field Notes for Food Adventure
by Brad Leone
Follow the star of Bon Appetit's YouTube series It's Alive as he explores nature, looking for food and fun. A blend of travel writing and recipes, Field Notes for Food Adventure will make anyone want to get outside and grab a bite.
Powers and Thrones
by Dan Jones
