Just placed my order for Prof. Ahmed's book, Journey Into Islam, 6:30 PM September 11, 2010 (even though Pastor "let's not give him any more attention" seemingly did not burn any books today) (and thanks Bolton for the link to the Guardian article, it was a marvelous overview with a great quote from Milton: "Anyone who kills a man, Milton said, kills 'a reasonable creature, God's image; but he who destroys a good book kills reason itself'.") As Salman Rushdie's novel Haroun and the Sea of Stories was next on my "to buy" list I thought it might do for today's purchase, but since it is itself a book against censorship, I suddenly realized that it wasn't a concept which would actually open my mind, as had been my original idea. Prof. Ahmed's book might include views which are unknown to me, and so since he was the inspiration for my post, I thought I'd do him the courtesy of buying his book. I am a fan of Studs Terkel's book Working and his interviews with everyday people, and I look forward to reading similar interviews in Prof. Ahmed's book. People in the WTC on that terrible day were everyday people going about their lives, and I think I can honor them by reading the words of other ordinary people going about their lives who may feel as if their beliefs have been hijacked in ways that they do not agree with.

I read "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" and found it plodding and not very interesting. I work with a group of Powells people who are Steig Larsson groupies so I don't voice this opinion out loud...lol. It is interesting to be outside a literary phenomenon. Good to remember that everyone has different reading tastes.
