Ostensibly a book about the author's attempt to unsuccessfully market her experimental film, this book wanders from one topic to the next with a scattershot narrative that covers segments of the author's life, her relationships with friends, her professor husband, and Africa, her virtual lover. In between pieces of her story she weaves the stories of artist Paul Thek, philosopher Simone Weil, and revolutionary Ulrike Meinhof in a way that highlights her own alienness in the world and the use of culturally marginalized experience as a means of escape. An exquisite meditation on being an artist and a woman in a world hostile to both.
