Warning: Hostage will hold you captive. Veteran mystery writer Robert Crais leaps into hyperdrive with this edge-of-your-seat thriller, touted by many reviewers as the best of 2001. Now in paperback, Hostage should become this year's must-have summer beach read. It's a cunning combination of smalltime punks, Mafia hitmen, high-tech kids, and the small-town police chief (struggling with his own psycho-demons) who fights to keep them all from killing each other. The plot zooms, the characters rage, and author Crais sustains the tension just below flashpoint for 384 kick-butt pages. Did we call this a book? As you read, it'll unspool more like a mental movie. You'll only need to add the popcorn.
