Top Ten Reasons People Don't Garden (Part 4)

by Mel Bartholomew, February 18, 2010 9:07 AM
Kids love to garden. Start them off with their own 3' x 3' Square Foot Gardening box — that means they will have 9 squares with 9 different things to choose. Remember, each square gets a different kind of plant. Make sure you include some flowers, for example, four pansies in the first square, nine bush beans in another, 16 radishes, one pepper plant, four marigolds in another square, and on and on.

Continuing with the Top 10 Reasons People Don't Garden...

Reason 7. "My soil is too bad to grow anything."

That's simple: plant on top of the ground! Start by picking a spot that gets good sunlight, then lay down a shallow 4' x 4' box (we build or buy). Next, add a weed fabric to the bottom, fill the box with a great soil mixture, add our SFG grid, and start planting. It can even be done on gravel, concrete, or a patio deck or terrace.

Reason 8. "Gardens use too much water."

Using good, organic methods and planting the right varieties for your area will go a long way toward reducing your water use. When you buy vegetables, you are still paying for water costs. If you grow them yourself, you have the option of reducing cost and increasing efficiency.
