You have no doubt had to get uncomfortably familiar with the term “supply chain” in the last few years; I’m sad to report that this year is no different: printers are at capacity, shipping is more difficult and more expensive, and new disruptions are sure to arise. This is all to say that many of the fancy, unique, and beautiful books coming this fall are one-shots. It’s not that they’ll never be reprinted, but they won’t be reprinted again any time soon, and definitely not in time to be gifted this holiday season. This is the time of year when shoppers especially don’t want to miss out.
You can protect yourselves against that sad fate by preordering. Preorders are great for authors and bookstores, and they guarantee you a copy of the book, and books are the best.
To aid you in your quest, I’ve put together a list of Fall 2022 titles that I think are particularly preorderable.
For an in-depth rundown on how to go about shopping for our bookloving loved ones this season, check out our holiday shopping tips from 2021.
Apollo Remastered
by Andy Saunders
Restored from the original film from the Apollo missions, this book includes hundreds of breathtaking images. It doesn’t have a large print run, however, so don’t miss out.
Creature
by Shaun Tan
Shaun Tan is a real visionary, and this retrospective of his work includes his own reflections on his work and the artistic process.
The Complete Eightball 1-18
by Daniel Clowes
Hugely influential, it’s a real treat to have all of Daniel Clowes’ Eightball together in a beautiful package.
Legends & Lattes
by Travis Baldree
This title was previously self-published, but has since been picked up by the very smart people at Tor. It has a healthy print run, but as we’ve awaited the release of the new edition, the absence of Legends & Lattes from the shelves has been acutely felt by shoppers and booksellers alike. Don’t risk being absent from this delightful “Novel of High Fantasy and Low Stakes” any longer than is strictly necessary!
Noma 2.0
by René Redzepi
They don’t hand out Michelin stars for incredibly-well photographed and designed cookbooks, but if they did, René Redzepi would have another three, at least.
Raising the Bar
by Brett Adams and Jacob Grier
We’ve already had a great deal of early interest in this essential guide to home bartending by Portland’s own Brett Adams; this book could really be the toast of the season.
The Passenger Box Set
by Cormac McCarthy
Cormac McCarthy’s two new novels are the publishing event of the season. The books may not be hard to find, but I’m not sure how long the boxed set — designed by Chip Kidd — will be available.
Hilma af Klint: The Complete Catalogue Raisonné
by edited by Kurt Almqvist and Daniel Birnbaum
If you’re looking for something special this season, well, just look at this! The entire output of abstract pioneer Hilma af Klint — nearly 1,600 works in seven volumes!!! (I hope my editor will allow the flourish of multiple exclamation points; surely we can agree that they’re warranted.) (ed. note: exclamation points warranted and allowed; if one of the editor’s loved ones is reading this, this book is on the editor’s wish list, thank you.) The on-sale date for this is December 20, so factor that into your plans as you hit the preorder button decisively.
