Elizabeth Ellen is a master of capturing the insecurities and inner workings of her characters. They drink, fight, sneak around, seduce, and stumble around trying to figure out their lives. There is very little (if any) crying. Elizabeth Ellen's people are tough and defiant but somehow still vulnerable, and that vulnerability gives the book a true glow.
