Our used book buying counters are now open at all three of our Portland-area locations! Customers are once again invited to bring us your used books for resale. Please know that when selling your used books in-store, we offer payment via store credit only (no cash).
Buying used books has always been at the center of our business, and we look forward to once again giving used books new lives (and readers!) on our shelves. Importantly, Powell's Used Book Buying program has changed. Please take the time to read the following information thoroughly before visiting us at the Used Book Buying counters.
When selling us your books, know that you have options. You can sell us your books online or in our stores at the Used Book Buying counters. Please read these updated guidelines carefully as the programs have changed.
Selling Used Books Online:
Visit our online book buying module
and follow the detailed instructions for submitting your bid. With this option, you will enter the ISBNs of the books you wish to sell and print a label to ship your books to us. We offer payment through Paypal and store credit when you use our online selling option.
Selling Used Books in Our Stores:

Why are you no longer offering cash in-store?
With few exceptions, we buy books in good condition.
A current government-issued photo ID is required.
We do not buy outdated textbooks or old encyclopedia sets.
If you're planning on bringing in several boxes, please arrive at least one hour before our buying tables close.

The past 20 months have been tumultuous for everyone, and the book industry is no exception. It’s taken this long for us to reopen our counters on a limited basis, and we are still working to rebuild our staff, our inventory, and our infrastructure. Due to these recent changes, we’ve elected to offer only credit at the counter. If you would prefer to receive cash, please use our online module.
Is there a limit on how many books I can bring?
We currently do not have a limit on the number of books or boxes customers can bring. Wait times may vary by location.
Do I need an appointment before I arrive?
Our used book buying counters are first come, first served. No appointments necessary.
Are there specific genres of books that you buy back during the year?
We buy for all of our sections, and for all of our stores, at each of our buying counters. What we buy on any given day changes based on our current inventory, sales trends, and (of course) what our customers bring to the table. A good rule of thumb is that the books you want most are the books we want most – after all, you’re our customer.
