Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Secret History
by
Donna Tartt
Katy N.
, January 02, 2011
The story of six Greek studies students attending an elite Vermont college. One of the group is murdered by the others. The narrator is the only one in the group that is not of a wealthy family though this is not an important fact. It is author Donna Tartt's complex analysis and ability to describe the psychology and inevitability of the outcome that makes this such a good book. At the novel's end I felt I knew the characters very well.

Sex, murder, class struggle. This novel is based on all of these things and I defy you not to find yourself in here. I enjoyed this story as much as Kirino's novel Out.

Dont Know Much about History Everything You Need to Know about American History But Never Learned
by

I was wandering through the store when I came across this book and thought - I don?t know nearly as much about the history of my country as I should. Don?t know much at all. I couldn't even name the original thirteen colonies. This is a book I can pick up anytime and read a little or read a lot. The writing is clear and concise and filled with interesting bits. Not just factoids but good reporting and explanations. The edition I have (2003) begins with Christopher Columbus and ends with an excerpt from the 2002 State of the Union address. The author includes ?must read? titles throughout the book for those who want more on the particular subject.

Birds of Oregon Field Guide
by
Stan Tekiela

I decided after buying a bird feeder and seeing how many types of birds came to feed to start learning the names of them all since none of them were wearing their nametags. I tried one other book and online but found I had to know what kind of bird it was before I could see if I was right. With Birds of Oregon I can flip to the corresponding color marked on the outside pages with the birds at my feeder and easily identify them. With one bird I was still a bit unsure but the description of its flight pattern was so dead on I was able to differentiate it from another I thought it might have been. If I drop this copy into a birdbath I'll rplace it with the same thing.
