Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. A crazy plot of desire, murder, sex and science. Funny, creepy, and the writing is solid. I read it in just a couple of days.

Hardest Working Man How James Brown Saved the Soul of America
by
James Sullivan
Amanda Schaefer
, February 10, 2011
This book is great - I love a book that gives biographical information in the context of culture and politics. It never claims to be a full biography of James Brown - just a glimpse of the man and his music in relation to a specific time period (after the assassination of MLK). THe book explores a historic performance in Boston, and discusses the impact James Brown had on the Civil Rights movement before and after Dr. King's death. Excellent read.

The perfect mystery for the book lover. Creepy, with great twists and turns, and a main character that any book nerd will love. Especially great for lovers of classic British fictiona ala the Bronte sisters. Highly recommended.

Story of Tibet Conversations with the Dalai Lama
by
Thomas Laird
Amanda Schaefer
, August 04, 2009
A very good popular history of Tibet. It blends Laird's frame story of interviewing the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala, his historical research, and the Dalai Lama's unique personal perspective on Tibetan history. Excellent, and very readable.

Year of Living Biblically One Mans Humble Quest to Follow the Bible as Literally as Possible
by
A J Jacobs
Amanda Schaefer
, January 02, 2009
This is a surprisingly reverent exploration of the Bible as well as the customs of those who believe in it literally. It's fascinating to watch Jacobs transform bit by bit through this exploration.

Fifteen years ago I recieved Charlotte's Web for Christmas. This year for Christmas I'm reading Mr. White's volume of essays. If you loved his children's books as a child, you'll love his insightful and (of course) stylish essays as an adult.

I wish this book was longer just so I could keep reading it. The entire book made so much sense, even the parts that weren't real.

Grass Is Singing
by

I started this book thinking that Lessing could do no wrong -- and this book is no exception. The story is so simple yet so intriguing and disturbing at the same time. A great balance, and a great book.

Both funny and sad at times. The characters she creates are so rich and fascinating, I couldn't wait to get home from work and read this book.
