Fault in Our Stars

Definitely the best book I read this year. It's so rare to find a book that tells a story that makes you laugh, and cry and reevaluate your own life. I have thought about this book and its characters often since finishing it and that is a rare thing for this avid reader. I am now begging my daughters and husband to read it!

Thirteen Women of the Otherworld 13
by
Kelley Armstrong
SuzG

This is the final installment in Armstrong's excellent supernatural series. The conflict in the story is carried over from previous books so I think it is important to be very familiar with the world Armstrong has created and its characters. The action is exciting and fast-paced and it seems as if every character from all the previous books is here in the finale. And although I appreciate her attempt to give her fans once last chance to spend time with their favorite characters, I kept being distracted in the second half of the book by the "head hopping" of the narration between all these people. I do not mind seeing the drama unfold in a story from multiple people's perspectives, but it felt forced and sometimes confusing to me.

Th1rteen R3asons Why
by
Asher, Jay

An exceptional YA book that this 40-something enjoyed thoroughly! My 15 year old also read it as part of her English class and it made a big, positive impact on her, too. Jay Asher is now on my auto-buy list.

Anna 01 Anna Dressed in Blood

Kendare Blake

This YA novel is my choice for the 2012 Puddly Award. It's a ghost story, a love story and and a horror story. Somehow Kendare Blake manages all these genres and keeps the story moving and the reader thoroughly entertained. I am looking forward to the sequel in 2012.

Night to Surrender Spindle Cove 01
by
Tessa Dare

A good story -- nothing new or groundbreaking here -- but much improved by the author's wonderful dialogue. Dare's wry sense of humor is so appealling that her books have become "auto buys" for me. I found it to be a very nice read over a rainy and cool weekend.

Line

Very good YA novel with just the right amount of mystery and suspense to keep your interest piqued. I would describe this dystopian story as "sci-fi lite" so it's a good introduction to the genre without quite so much "far out" world building that puts some readers off. It's a short read with a cliffhanger ending so I am highly anticipating the next novel in the series, Away (September 2011).

Ladys Lesson in Scandal
by
Meredith Duran
SuzG
, September 13, 2011
An excellent Pygmalion inspired story with all the classic hurdles: Our heroine must be taught to speak, look and act like a "true" lady in every conceivable situation. The way the main characters meet in this romance is wonderful and I thought the development of their relationship was well done. This was a hard book for me to put down each day. I also liked that Duran does a great job of keeping this question central throughout the book: Is it really that great a thing to go from rags to riches? (Beyond a safe place to live and work and always having clean food available to you, of course.) But after those basic needs are met how much does a person give up to fit in with the strictures of society?

Twelfth Enchantment
by
David Liss
SuzG
, September 12, 2011
This book has a wonderful premise but it never truly grabbed my interest. I believe it was the somewhat stiff characterizations that kept me from becoming invested with these fictional people. I found myself not liking the characters very much and therefore not caring enough to find out what happens next.

Breaking Point
by
Pamela Clare
SuzG
, September 11, 2011
Clare has created a masterfully written romantic suspense with just the right balance of romance and edge of your seat thrills. The relationship between the main characters felt believable to me and the chemistry between them was wonderful. The suspense portion of this book is interesting and realistic but I will warn that it is not for the faint of heart. The storyline deals with drug cartels in Mexico and there is a great deal of violence (kidnap, murder and heinous abuse of women). I don't mind when my fiction also opens my mind a bit to some harsh realities in our world but I want to know beforehand so I can decide if this is the book I want for my precious reading time.

All I Ever Wanted
by
Kristan Higgins
SuzG
, September 10, 2011
I recently re-read this book and was quickly reminded of why it's on my permanent "keeper" shelf. Higgins' stories don't always work for me because her heroines can sometimes be a bit . . . . whiny. But Callie, the main female character in All I Ever Wanted, is such a trooper and her persevering attitude and sense of humor are nearly contagious. I feel better after reading this book! I highly recommend this fun and romantic read.

The Violets of March
by
Sarah Jio
SuzG
, September 09, 2011
Not quite a perfect read but definitely a very good one I would describe as a combination of mystery, romance, ghost story and redemption tale. At times, I was disappointed because I felt as if Jio just told the reader something rather than showing it through dialogue and description. And the parallels between the present day characters and the past characters did not have to be so exactly mirrored. That aspect of the story felt forced to me. But I really like the ending! I thought she managed to give the reader a satisfying resolution but with a nice bit of mystery surrounding it.

Gift Of Love

Jude Deveraux

A good collection of short stories, each easily read in one sitting. My complaint with them is that the characters and situations are obviously dated. These stories were published in 1995 and you can tell!

The Making of a Duchess
by
Shana Galen
SuzG
, September 06, 2011
A great story that grabs you from the very first chapter as the young hero, Julien, escapes with this mother from french peasants intent on killing their aristocratic family. The story picks up again 14 years later with Julien actively working to find out if any other members of his family might still be alive in France. I particularly like the heroine, Sarah. She is intelligent and resourceful but yet incredibly sheltered because of her life in an orphanage so her reactions to the conflicts in this story are a lot of fun. The hero, Julien, is just the right blend of alpha male and cooperative partner to Sarah.

Next to Love
by
Ellen Feldman
SuzG
, September 05, 2011
Many books gloss over or even romanticize the toll a war takes on those left at home. "Next to Love" focuses on WWII's effect on a group of women and the price all of them pay -- regardless of whether their soldier comes home from combat. This book is compelling. It's a raw, honest and heartbreaking look at loss and it's consequences. While reading it there were several times I wanted to stop but I didn't because I simply had to know what happens to these women.

Silent Scream
by
Karen Rose
SuzG
, September 03, 2011
Karen Rose accomplishes what (I have found) very few authors can create successfully: A cross genre story where each part of the story is equally well done. I would describe this story as a police procedural & mystery & romance & thriller. Yes, there is a lot going on! But I was kept intrigued, entertained and engaged throughout the entire book.

Sweetest Thing Lucky Harbor 02
by
Jill Shalvis
SuzG
, September 02, 2011
A good, fun and easy read. Shalvis always has great dialogue and steamy romance. I didn't always like these characters, though, and that was compounded by the fact that the issues she created for these people were very predictable and somewhat repetitive.
