Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

If a friend had not suggest "Martin Marten" by Brian Doyle, I would have missed this glistening book. So, please think of me as your friend recommending a favorite book. Can't really call it just a novel--consider it as nature study, bildungsroman, love story, adventure, philosophy, lists (great rollicking, inconsistent, and poetic lists that challenge the great list maker Umberto Eco) ecological promptings, parenting class, or perhaps Doyle's soul's diary. It is marketed as young adult literature. I think it fits that category about as much as "The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man." However you may or may not chose to classify it, it moved me. While reading the last few pages my tears fell. Not crying, just tears.

If I was one to write in my books, marking favorite passages, this book would have been densely marked up. I loved it, the lyrical writing, the unique perspectives on humans and nature, and the presence of the Mountain. I'll be reading this book again one day.
