I really enjoy the historical fiction genre, especially when I learn new details from history that I hadn’t previously known. Lynn Austin always does an amazing job of bringing history to life in her novels, and this one is no different!
Long Way Home is set during World War II and follows the story of Jim, a medic, his neighbor Peggy, and Gisela a Jewish nurse. Jim returns from the war traumatized by the events he witnessed and his friend and neighbor, Peggy, works to get him the help that he needs. I learned many new things from this book about this time period, especially in regards to the USS St. Louis and the horrible things the Jewish people onboard endured.
Long Way Home is written in a dual timeline, which I generally find difficult and don’t enjoy, but these stories are woven together almost seamlessly and you will easily be able to switch back and forth through the story and between characters. Don’t let the dual timeline dissuade you from giving this book a chance!
If you enjoy historical fiction, give this heartbreaking, yet heartwarming book a read!
