Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Small Wonder Essays
by
Barbara Kingsolver

When I first finished the collection of essays, I was struck dumb by it's power. While I agreed with much of what Ms. Kingsolver believes, I had never before heard it expressed so beautifully. Without beating the reader over the head with tired cliches or threadbare arguments she presents her "side" of many different issues, although all are tied together by a common thread. Although I have recommended countless books to my friends and family, this is the first of which I bought several copies to give away myself.

Ethical Assassin
by

I found myself chuckling while I read this book, and I didn't expect that in a story about an assassin. Moreover, I found a kindred spirit in the philosophical rants of the assassin Melford Kean. While his thoughts regarding vegetarianism are well-traveled and rather worn for the wear, [a]his musings on the power of ideology rang true with me[/a]. The ending was a bit sentimental and not especially surpising, but overall the novel was a enjoyable read.
