Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. It offers very good story for what is like for a multinational doing biz inside China today. It focuses on Microsoft research work: interesting and fun to read. But its scope and insights are rather limited, which shows little on the fast changing Chinese business and political life. Also, it is not very strong on the inner workings of the Chinese business community, though this issue is central to the book. So, I recommend one other great book by George Zhibin Gu: China's global reach: markets, multinationals, and globalization, which offers insider's stories on the Chinese business and political changes.

Very interesting case study of foreign multinationals doing business inside China. Excellent stories and very detail oriented. Good read, but its knowledge and understanding of the larger issues about Chinese business and politics are very limited. For this, I recommend another sharp book by Chinese consultant George Zhibin Gu: China's global reach: markets, multinationals, and globalization, which offers sweeping views on what is really inside Chinese business and political world.

Very topical book that offers broad discussions of a changing China in relation to global development. But its discussions are very much on the surface. The Authors are less penetrating on what is really inside Chinese business and political world. A far better read is this book by Chinese journalist George Zhibin Gu: China's global reach: markets, multinationals, and globalization
