Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Dragonfly In Amber Outlander 02
by
Diana Gabaldon

Maybe it's because I'm a history hound or maybe I overly appreciate kilts, but I appreciate Gabaldon's take on others' acceptance of time-travel and her relentless historical research and willingness to share it. In the first of this series, Outlander, she tells, in a foreward letter to her readers, her own struggles of wanting to and ultimately writing a good story. Her candid account of how the characters in the Outlander series take shape make her stories better than the typical (as one friend calls them) "bodice-rippers". I understand history is boring to some, but if you have the imagination to picture yourself on those battlefields, living in castles, wearing 'funny' clothing, or spending one nickel on an ice-cream, then I think you will appreciate Gabaldon's historical, paranormal fiction.

Twilight: Twilight 1
by
Stephenie Meyer

My 13 year old absolutely loves this whole series and Twilight in particular. She and most of her friends are very excited that Twilight - the movie is being filmed in Portland, Oregon (home of Powell's City of Books) right now (March 2008). Somehow, author Meyer has been able to write a story about vampires that isn't scary enough to enduce nightmares, yet is a page turner from beginning to end for a generation used to immediacy.

Atkins for Life
by

A little too wordy when you've already chosen to lose, continue to lose, or maintain lost weight on Atkins. A good reference to why your body might respond to a high protein regimen by cutting or reducing the amount of carbs you eat. Also explains well the difference between "good" carbs and unneccesary carbs and how your body utilizes them. If you're looking for a low-carb meal planner, however, I would choose the Atkins New Diet Revolution or a different low-carb diet to start. Jonny Bowden wrote a good resource for choosing called: Living the Low Carb Life: From Atkins to the Zone, Choosing the Diet That's Right For You. All these resources are available at Powells. http://www.powells.com

This is exactly what my son needs to start high school German. I love that I can walk from work in uptown Portland to pick it up in good used condition for only $3.95!
