Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Waking Up White: And Finding Myself in the Story of Race
by
Debby Irving
latereader
, April 09, 2017
My sister recommended I read this, because she felt I was not in full control of my own white privilege. Yet again, she was projecting her life experience onto me, which has proved inaccurate. As I read, I kept an open mind and tried to identify with the writer. I found that I could not fully engage, because I am very aware of my own history and understanding of race. I can see, however, it would not feel condescending to someone who needs the potential 'awakening'. In this respect, I do recommend this book to readers that may still need a little tweaking to fully understand where others, not of the same race, are coming from. A good clue to whether this is a good read for you would be to consider a comment on the jacket flap. Irving explains that her husband told her "It couldn't have happened to a whiter person!" in reference to her awakening. If you feel like you would possibly rather read an account from the husband (whom I supposed is more enlightened), then maybe you don't share a similar enough life experience to appreciate Irving's accounts.

I just bought my own copy of Veiled in Beauty from Powell's and I love it! I have made a bridal veil for two of my nieces from scratch according to their desired style and now that I have this book, I am terribly excited to create some of the designs shown. Contained within this sewing guide are unique, classic, vintage and gorgeous veils of every length to satisfy your creativity and personality.

Good In Bed
by
Jennifer Weiner
latereader
, July 11, 2013
When I was about halfway through reading Good In Bed, my husband spied it on the coffee table and his eyebrows raised. "It's not what you think..." was the opening to my response. What it was, was a tongue-in-cheek look at our heroine, Candace Shapiro, with all her imagined and real foibles. I was almost finished reading this clever little Summer-on-the-deck book when I realized it was by the author of In Her Shoes, another of my favorite stories. I'm going to be locating more of Weiner's books soon!

Body Surfing
by
Anita Shreve
latereader
, September 24, 2012
I wanted a good book to read on vacation at the beach this summer and I found it in Body Surfing by Anita Shreve. I'm usually too busy to enjoy a book in a short period of time. I breezed right through this national bestseller as the writing and subject matter romanced and engrossed me in it's pages. It was very easy to picture the story in my head and forget about other things going on around me that didn't really deserve my attention. If you like Summer, Sun and/or fantasize about ocean beaches, you'll want to give this book a look-see!

Pat The Husband

If you enjoyed sharing Pat the Bunny with your children, you will get a great kick out of sharing Pat the Husband with all of your friends. I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked it up, but was pleasantly surprised as I 'worked' each page to reveal each male-centric cliche'. This book would make a darling inclusion as part of a wedding shower gift or in any other situation where poking fun at the 'stronger' sex would be appreciated.

Sundays At Tiffanys
by
James Patterson
latereader
, September 08, 2011
I have only read a few books in less than a week and this is the latest. I was surprised that a romantic novel was produced by James Patterson and found this out when Lifetime made it into a film. The notion of falling in love with your childhood imaginary friend seemed odd to me at first, because mine was a little girl, but since the heroine misses her dad as a very young girl, it's not at all surprising that her imaginary friend is a grown man. Patterson and co-author Gabrielle Charbonnet created a quick, enjoyable read out of, what on the surface seemed to be, a silly concept. Sundays at Tiffany's is written in a way that makes it seem possible and real all-the-while reminding you of a child's delicate self-esteem and the importance of a mother's love.

Compass American Guides Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Parks 1st Edition
by
Brian Kevin

No spoilers here! You have to actually go to Yellowstone to discover it's unparalleled natural beauty, but this guide book gave us the best view of how to discover our country's first National Park for the first time better than any others we could find. It's not just a guide, but has the right balance of information, photographs, maps, direction and tidbits of information to make it the one you should choose to help you decide where to spend your time in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. Speaking of the photographs, Jeff Vanuga did an amazing job of taking clear, colorful, one-of-a-kind pictures for this 1st edition. Also, each photo has the location clearly indicated, some right on the full page photo itself! I researched which guide I wanted my family to use for this travel experience through our county library and THIS is the one I'm going to buy to keep!

New Moon: Twilight 2
by
Stephenie Meyer
latereader
, October 15, 2008
I've just finished the second book in the Twilight series, New Moon after my 13 year old (now 14) daughter zipped through the entire series in a matter of weeks. She loved all four books so much that I had to see what all the hub-bub was about. I didn't own New Moon when I finished Twilight and nearly went through withdrawal symptoms not being able to continue the saga immediately! Furthering my frustration, I was out-of-town and could hardly wait to return home to Powell's to buy a copy and start on it. At first, I was disappointed that Edward's character 'disappeared' and wasn't sure I even wanted to continue reading New Moon, but Stephenie's writing is so intriguing I'm already on to #3, Eclipse. Don't let the fact that these are written for youth hinder your interest in reading them. Of course, I've always had a 'thing' for vampires, so I think Ms. Meyer has it all figured out!

House & Home
by
Kathleen Mccleary

, October 13, 2008
I found this book totally delightful. The perfect length for that not-often-gotten alone time I need. It reads somewhat like a daytime drama (commonly known as the soap opera) in that there are characters you identify with, characters you want to dislike and somehow can't really, characters that seem very familiar and others you wish you could get to know. Yes, our heroine, Ellen does seem a bit neurotic, but who hasn't wanted to burn their house down out of love and desperation..? Is that why I love the ambiance of candles? ;o)
