Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Heart Shaped Box
by
Joe Hill
dealia11
, April 16, 2007
Heart Shaped Box begins a little slowly, as the reader is compelled to understand the idiosyncrasies of Judas Coyne. Quickly, the protagonist appears and the reader is thrust into the plot like a cannon blast. I could not stop thinking of this book, even though I had to put it down for a few minutes--it's that scary. Hill has as much talent as his father (similarities abound- both create sympathetic, fleshed charaters) and has another talent: the simple umbrella plot of HSB is far from simple when Hill is through with it. I'm going to re-read this book, and highly recommend others pick it up. I;m excited to see what is in the future for Hill. If this book is any indication, he's only going to get better and better.

Amazing Dope Tales & Haight Street Flash
by
Stephen Gaskin

, September 14, 2006
Gaskin's book dives right into the heyday of the Haight-Ashbury district, setting the story of his own evolution through the use of various drugs and experiences. While the packaging may be a little garish (at least my printing is), don't let it chase you away. Gaskin has some truly mind-opening insight into his "journey", and there's some wonderful narration to match.
