[t]Rivka?s Way[/t], by [a]Teri Kanefield[/a], is the story of fifteen-year-old Rivka Liebermann, a [kw]Jewish[/kw] girl who was living in the [kw]Jewish quarter of Prague[/kw] in the [kw]eighteenth century[/kw]. She is soon to be married to someone her father chose. Although, she is not unhappy with her father?s choice, she is feeling restless and anxious. Rivka wants to see what is outside of the walls that surround the Jewish quarter. She convinces her father to take her on a business trip into the city. However, she does not have the opportunity to explore this immense new world. Rivka decides to sneak out on her own, dressed as a gentile boy, and explore for herself. This leads to her meeting Mikul, a young Christian, who is destitute and in debt. Rivka discovers that there are many injustices in the world outside the Jewish quarter. Within the protection of the walls where she was raised, the Jewish people made their own laws. Rivka is ultimately caught. However, she finds that the man she is promised to is sympathetic to her feelings. His willingness to help her new friend Mikul, as well as his promise to take her outside the walls again, helps Rivka to understand that she is engaged to a good man. She ultimately comes to terms with her future.

Witchs Boy
by

[t]The Witch?s Boy[/t], [a]by Michael Gruber[/a], is many tales within a tale. The main storyline is about a deformed boy who is left to die by his parents and adopted by the witch of the forest. He is named Lump, and he is raised to understand the language of the [kw]animals[/kw]; his nursemaid is a bear, and his tutor is a captive [kw]djinn[/kw]. One day, he accidentally meets up with a human family. They think he is a monster and capture him. After experiencing their cruelty, his spirit is crushed and his reactions cause his adoptive family to be uprooted from their home and his adoptive mother to be stripped of her powers. Willful and unrepentant, he ends up separating from his family, and through many adventures, he discovers who he really is inside and who he has the potential to be. He also realizes what he lost when he lost his adoptive family. He discovers his true love?a blind woman who loves him for who he is, and not what he looks like. Finally, he tracks down his lost family and makes amends for the past. Intertwined with this story is a delightful myriad of [kw]fairy tales [/kw]told from the witch?s perspective. Although a [kw]fantasy [/kw]story, the subject of an [kw]adolescent [/kw]progressing on a [kw]journey of self-discovery[/kw] is an eternal one that applies to every child.
