Bagels Lucky Hat
by
Hector Mumbly
Kids Literati
, January 04, 2008
Bagel's Lucky Hat is a comical story about Bagel the dog and his search for his missing lucky hat. My seven-year old son grabbed this book when he saw it and devoured the book quickly from cover to cover. After his first reading, he looked up at me and said, "Mama, who ever wrote this book has A LOT of imagination!", and I concurred. Bagel the dog and his friend Becky the cat are getting ready for bedtime when Bagel is upset to discover his lucky hat is missing. As the friends puzzle about where the hat could be, Bagel thinks back over the wild antics of the day. Becky is in disbelief as Bagel recounts stories of sailing down a river with a school of laughing fishes, flying through the skies with a flock of friendly birds, chasing his lucky hat through the underground laboratory of a mad scientist, and getting trapped in a giant space-traveling robot, and making friends with aliens from deep space. Becky doesn't believe Bagel's outlandish stories, and it's a big surprise where Bagel's lucky hat turns up.

Tracks Of A Panda
by
Nick Dowson
Kids Literati
, January 04, 2008
Panda bears are an enchanting species, so majestic and rare, yet seemingly cuddly and sweet. Tracks of a Panda is a beautiful children's book about a mama panda and her newborn baby panda, and their struggle to survive. This gorgeous book illustrates the care and nurturing of the baby panda as the mother struggles to find bamboo for food and a home that is safe from predators, both animal and human. Alongside the story of the pandas are informative facts about panda bears and their life, habits, skills, and challenges. A lovely story, a reflection of the universal bond between mother and baby, and the fragile struggle for survival.

Sock Monkey Rides Again
by
Cece Bell
Kids Literati
, March 23, 2007
Who doesn't love Sock Monkeys? I find them irresistible. I love that Sock Monkey has his own series of children's books starring himself and his plushy stuffed friends. Sock Monkey Rides Again by Cece Bell is the third picture book in the Sock Monkey series, and here Sock Monkey gets to star as a singing cowboy in a big movie! He gets to ride a horse, wear a spiffy outfit, and lasso a cow. However Sock Monkey is scared, because he has to kiss the leading lady - he doesn't want to have to kiss a girl! Ew! The sequel to Sock Monkey Goes to Hollywood: A Star is Bathed and Sock Monkey Boogie-Woogie: A Friend is Made, the third book features Sock Monkey and his friends, Miss Bunn, Froggie, Blue Pig, and Sock Buddy as he learns how to be a singing cowboy movie star...and overcome his fears. This is a hilarious and endearing story about the beloved toy and his friends.

by
Alethea Kontis, Bob Kolar
Kids Literati
, March 23, 2007
For subversive alphabet lovers - here's a great picture book with bright colors, a sassy story, and a mixed-up alphabet frenzy. AlphaOops! The Day Z Went First is a fun and hip tale for budding readers who don't like their letters in order. This is the tale of the day Z hijacked A's alpha-dog status and the whole alphabet goes into chaos, as 26 stubborn, inspired, and lost letters wreck havoc on the orderly ABC's. Delightfully written by Alethea Knotis and illustrated by Bob Kolar.

Fairy Houses Everywhere
by
Barry Kane
Kids Literati
, March 23, 2007
Fairy Houses...Everywhere! is an amazing book filled with photographs of magical fairy houses constructed lovingly with all natural objects by creative fairy-friends of all ages. The natural art of building fairy houses was unearthed by Barry and Tracy Kane while visiting a small island off the coast of Maine. There in the woods Tracy discovered little fairy houses visitors had built, always following the guidelines of only using materials found in nature and not harming anything living. Tracy began to spread the enchanting pastime through books, a dvd, and workshops. Now, the joy has inspired the creation of many new fairy house villages and an annual Fairy Houses Tour in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Fairy Houses...Everywhere! is filled with photographs of gorgeous real fairy houses in woodlands, on the beach, in meadows, in backyard gardens, in the air, and elaborate fairy mansions. There are gorgeous fairy houses in this book, handbuilt with leaves, twigs, stones, dried grasses, flowers, seashells, pinecones, feathers, seedpods, gourds, creativity, love, and magic. This book will be treasured by all ages to look through again and again. It is an inspiration for all people to connect with nature in a fun hands-on way. Not just for kids, Tracy and Barry have inspired and photographed fairy house creators ranging from ages 3 to 93. Fairy house building can bring together multiple generations of family. Most importantly, the houses are incredibly adorable.

Story Of Cherry The Pig
by
Utako Yamada
Kids Literati
, March 05, 2007
The Story of Cherry the Pig is a delightful tale of a dessert-loving pig who bakes lots of desserts, shares an infamous Apple Cake, enters a baking competition, and opens her own bakery...all because of a misunderstanding. Cherry finds out that different creatures have different tastes and that she has a gift that can make every one's lives sweeter...or saltier. This is a very cute fairytale from Japan written and illustrated by the talented Utako Yamada, who also owns a dessert shop of her own. The illustrations are adorable and the tale is sweet. The simple warm color tones of the book add a classic feeling, reminding me of reading old-fashioned children's picture books. Cherry is an industrious and resilient pig who delights in her desserts. This story will be an inspiration to it's readers to try their own hand concocting sweet treats.

Moongirl The Collectors Edition With Dvd
by
Henry Selick, Peter Chan
Kids Literati
, March 05, 2007
Moongirl is a magnificent picture book and DVD gift set created by Henry Selick, Peter Chan, and Courtney Booker. The book is based on the award-winning short film by the director of The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach. The film includes a soundtrack created by They Might Be Giants. Moongirl is really the story of Leon, who has an incredible lunar adventure that begins with him night-fishing on the bayou under the light of the moon. When the moon goes dark, Leon is pulled upward into the night sky by a glowing fish made of stars. The starry fish propels Leon to crash into the center of the moon where he meets Moongirl, discovers a magical carousel at the center of the moon and saves the moon from the gargaloon, the mischievous dark monster on the moon. This is a magical, mesmerizing story which is delightful and enjoyable as both a book and film. Each presentation of the story highlights different aspects of the story and make a marvelous gift for any kid. A modern lunar fairytale for all ages.

Whos Hiding
by
Saturo Onishi
Kids Literati
, March 05, 2007
Who's Hiding? is a cute animal counting book from Japan by Satoru Onishi. On each page you see the same wide-eyed menagerie of animal buddies. However, with each page-spread's different colors, different animals are hiding on each page. This book looks simple but requires name and shape recognition, memory, and an eye for small details. You and a child will greatly enjoy finding out who's hiding, who has horns, who's backwards, who's sleeping, and more.

Clementine by Sara Pennypacker is a hilarious chapter book for second to fourth graders. Clementine is a third grade girl who is not having so good of a week. She has cutting off hair incidents, differences in perception with her teachers and principal when they think she is not paying attention, when really she is paying extra attention to everything. There is the battle of the Great Pigeon War. Not to mention best friends, little brothers who should be named Lima Bean, and ceiling snakes. Clementine is hilarious!

Sparkle & Spin A Book About Words
by
Ann Rand, Paul Rand
Kids Literati
, November 14, 2006
Sparkle and Spin: A Book About Words by Ann and Paul Rand is beautifully reprinted with a sparkling dust-jacket and classic design. This book, first published in 1957, uses cheerful language to explain the way words feel, communicate, sound, and look. The illustrations are filled with creative and expressive graphic design from the 1950's. The text rhymes along, exploring the many sides of words, while entertaining young readers with a lighthearted spirit. My first-grader is a beginner reader right now, so it was great to read this book together. Each page was a starting point from which we could talk more about different kinds of words and the diverse uses and meanings of them. Such as how some words sound the same, but are spelled different and have different meanings. Also, how words sometimes sound like what they are describing. Sparkle and Spin is a playful exploration of the ways of words, with creative text and pictures that will delight kids and adults. I'm glad this classic is back in print as a quality hardback.

Other Side
by
Istvan Banyai
Kids Literati
, November 14, 2006
he Other Side by Istvan Banyai is a visually dynamic and exciting book. There are little words in this book, and it is the graphic design that carries the reader along. Each illustration in the book has another side. As you turn each page over, you will be surprised by the unique perspective on "the other side". The illustrations are amusing, thought-provoking, and surprising. The book is like a kaleidoscope, each page a reflection of the whole, yet showing a different angle and aspect. If you are a fan of creative graphic design and illustration than you will love twisting your mind around the journey of this book. This is also an ideal picture book for inquisitive young minds who love an independent story, but aren't readers yet. I was captivated by this book from the beginning, but I fell in love with it when I saw the inside of the dust-jacket. It is a brilliant dust-jacket! The inside is the other side of the outside of the cover, and the cover of the hardback is yet another side of the picture. This is a well-designed, innovative, and smart book.

Princes Bedtime
by
Joanne Oppenheim
Kids Literati
, October 12, 2006
It is The Prince's Bedtime, yet nothing can get the prince to sleep. Night after night, the king, queen, courtiers stumble to find a way to entice the young prince to sleep, but he will not sleep. Before you even begin reading this story, the warm and expressive front cover will draw you in. The wide-awake prince is adorable and innocent, and it is easy to be smitten with him, while laughing at the hysteria of the kingdom over the prince's bedtime. The illustrations are full of delightful details, and created from a combination of acrylic paint and collage. For young readers, there are numbered sheep to count throughout the illustrated end papers. The story is catchy from beginning to end, with alliteration and rhyming couplets. The king declares that if anyone knows how to get the young prince to sleep, they should come to the castle. Travelers visit with various ways to encourage the boy to sleep, but they all tire themselves out in the process. A physician with sleeping syrup, makes the queen and the courtiers fall asleep, but the prince won't drink it. Dancers and musicians dance and play all through the night, until they fall asleep with exhaustion while the boy dances on. A mustached magician claims to cure with hypnotic spells, but instead produces trick birds, a bunny, roses, and a horse, until he gets kicked out by the king and queen, while the prince chases after the horse. A peasant brings him a feather-down quilt stuffed with pheasant feathers, which he jumps on and bursts, and thus, the Prince stays up all night giggling over the feather explosion. Jugglers, jesters, professors, nurses, chefs, and his family cannot entice the boy to sleep. Until one night an old women shows up at the castle with a story book with no pictures. She cuddles up with the prince and tells him to see the pictures in her stories, he must close his eyes. The old lady reads him stories until he falls happily asleep. This is a delightful modern fairytale written by Jeanne Oppenheim and illustrated by Miriam Latimer, that got thumbs-up at bedtime.

Circus
by
Roxie Munro
Kids Literati
, October 12, 2006
Circus is an open-the-flap, search-and-find interactive book by Roxie Munro. As soon as you open the cover, you lift the flaps to enter the circus tent and lift more flaps to read the title and author info. On each illustrated spread of the book, there are multiple flaps to lift showing dynamic illustrations. Under one of the flaps in each picture is a rhyme with a list of things to search for in the pictures, including Max the Cat, and Fred the Dog in every page. Every page introduces you to more members of the circus, from the clowns to the Terrific Trapeze Twins, Royal Red Riders, Pippin Pyramid Brothers, Astounding Agile Acrobates, and other performing troupes. At the end, you can search for all the different circus performers you met along the way, as you pick them out in the full three ring circus. I enjoyed how the flying trapeze artists, both unflap to meet at the center of the illustration, and how the tight-rope walker wobbles as you unfold her journey across the ropes. This fun and creative book will satisfy inquisitive young minds.
