Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Ha Haaa! What a laugh! Pity the poor overworked & under - appreciated low level drug-dealing hood! He just wants to have a better, more financially rewarding life than his parents had or that he could have had if he had taken the straight, honest 9-5 life. As hard as he works he can never get ahead much less retire safely to his (to his mind) well-deserved retirement. Makes the 30 year grind to an inadequate pension that is the life & fate of the rest of us look not quite so bad, or does it? Hmmm? maybe you could get away with it...? GOOD LUCK!

Somewhat predictable as to who-dunnit but with enough of a plot, procedure & characterization to be readable. Unfortunately the stock character of the compassionate policeman who plods along to another success in the face of his careerist superiors animosity & interferance is overdone as are his physical ailmaents & brilliant mental capacities. A combination of several fictional detectives that ends up as boring due to a lack of origionality.

Maybe the best book which I read last year when I found it in the local library. One of the best handful of new-to-me writers in at least a year. Could have been written about my hometown, about my family, friends & neighbours. Chilling in some ways, comforting in others. Disillusionment, conflicting values, a coming-of-age for the narrator at least, a book that makes us all think about what our values are, where our loyalties lie, the need to re-evaluate people and long-held beliefs and to have the integrity to stand up for what we know to be right but unpopular. I may have rated it too low.
