Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Follow The Music The Life & High Times
by
Jac Holzman
gregarious
, June 29, 2008
An amazing insight into a specific facet of one of my favourite historical periods, the 60's. Jac Holzman intuitive savvy is astounding and his place in the pantheon of rock immortals assured. His innovative spirit really translates well to the page. Even tho there are some areas I wish he would have explored deeply (i.e. the recording of Love's "Forever Changes)", reading about his futile resolve to keep the music business more about the music than the business is sobering. If you are a sucker for music bio's like me, this one is hard to put down. I even had to keep reading it in the car on a recent road trip.

Last Night a DJ Saved My Life The History of the Disc Jockey
by
Bill Brewster
gregarious
, October 09, 2006
I have read and re-read this book - and it gets better and more inspiring everytime. Running the historical gamut of the DiscJockey, Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton chronologically cover the impetus, motivation and the social context of what has evolved into the modern DJ and the various musical styles (i.e. Dub, House, Hi-NRG etc..) associated with dance/club culture. If you are a DJ or just a music fan - compelling!
