Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Hounded Iron Druid Chronicles 01

I've not read a book this entertaining in a mort of years. No, really. A very likeable lead character with lots of fine friends and a whole new kind of story. After reading this one (and the other 2, Hexed and Hammered, that compromise the initial offering from Mr. Hearne), I immediately reread them and enjoyed them just as much or more on the second read. I haven't done that in at least 20 years and some 2000+ books. Not to be missed.

Greywalker Greywalker 1

OK, this one totally sucked me in in just a few pages. Only ordered the first 2 to start, but after 24 hours and 2/3 of Greywalker, I'm here to order the rest. Thank heavens for Powell's. After Borders closed my midsize city was without a decent bookstore (Yes, I go to independent bookstores but unfortunately financial constraints limit the number of books they can carry. I also patronize 1/2 Price Books but since they have no control over their inventory, it's a crap shoot). Fair warning Powell's, in about 30 years I'm going to have someone sneak a bit of my ashes into the store so I can spend eternity in my favorite sections.

Daughter of the Blood The Black Jewels Trilogy Book 1

When I first started this book, it was a tough haul. It's not a pleasant read at some points and the last few years the world's been such a mess that I preferred escapist fluff. However, I had bought all of the 3 book series several years ago (I hate having to track down books that are a few years old and I didn't know about Powell's then) because of the excellent reviews and well, waste not, want not so a few years later I tried again. The second time I picked up the first book, it sucked me right in. Yes, it makes me squirm in places but I find it utterly fascinating that she's created a new power, a new species, a new culture. One that is well thought out and complicated (sometimes you almost need a score card). Feist's Magician series was the same way for me...first attempt, couldn't get in to it. A few years later, I couldn't read fast enough. Yes, the war between the sexes for power over the female is stark, but considering the recent news about the jerk from the IMF and the disclosure that American institutions like the military and the Peace Corps have been not just ignoring sexual assaults on the women in their ranks, but actually blaming them on the women and acting like 'boys will be boys so just get over it' makes it kind of a not so 'fictional' but much needed slap in the face. I'm not really surprised that a lot of men dislike them. They should get over it, women aren't all looking good here either. It (they) are good books. Well written (even the romance has it's necessary purpose), complicated, fascinating in the creation of totally a new people/place. Like Cherryh or MZ Bradley, that is an intriguing and awesome power to me.

Glad to see this one made multiple lists. It is an ever increasing source of amazement to me that everyone of these books is better than the last. Butcher is amazing. Can't wait until March!

Don't sit down to read it until you have the time to really read it. Yes, it's worth devoting a weekend to. Just make sure you have the next one (Winter Oak) waiting. Where's the next one James Hetley?
