Beautifully illustrated with pictures and drawings of species as well as clearly written, this boook covers the natural history of this vast & various part of America - its geology, soil, water, plants, animals. It brings life to this 'fly-over' county which is so easy to dismiss as dull, unchanging, and boring.

Splendid Exchange How Trade Shaped the World
by
William Bernstein
Mabry
, January 04, 2015
Not only is this the clearest explanation of 'free trade' vs 'protectionism' I have read, but it is a fascinating look at the history of world-wide trade from early times. He shows that there were far more & far earlier important trade networks than just the silk road, or the spice or beaver trade. The history alone is fascinating - who knew that the Middle & Far Eastern trade networks were so extensive? Did you know that Indian cotton was more expensive that silk in ancient Rome? Do you know who Henry Martyn is? He wrote a treatise on free trade 75 years before Adam Smith. I must admit to being confused by Smith's theories, as I could see lots of example of workers who lost by free trade. But Wolfgang Stoper and Paul Samuelson's theory clearly explained what was happening there and how that affected nations' trade policies. Entertaining as well as informative.

100 Lace Flowers to Crochet a Beautiful Collection of Decorative Floral & Leaf Patterns for Thread Crochet
by

As with her collection of 100 snowflakes, these flowers are addictive to crochet. They have a three-dimensionality that give them a charm that is not there with flat crochet designs. The designs accurately reflect the actual flower - peach blossom & dogwood have the characteristic curved shape, marigold & batchlor's buttons are fluffy. The directions are given in both text and diagram, making them easy to understand for all. A variety of colors & flowers just strewn on the table make a beautiful garden. Everyone thinks they are gorgeous. I can't stop making them - but maybe you don't want to know that.

The Naming of America: Martin Waldseemller's 1507 World Map and the Cosmographiae Introductio

The story of the making & discovery of this map is but a brief part of this book. Starting with TO maps, this is a fascinating & readable tale of the European view of the world. This view influenced map-making which in turn influenced widening exploration of the 'known' (to Europeans) world, which in turn influenced map-making, leading to yet further travels and explorations.
