Cloud Atlas A Novel
by
David Mitchell

Cloud Atlas is an inventive delight to read. With it's nesting doll layering of stories it could seem a bit gimmicky to some but it doesn't detract from the marvelous read itself. The variety of writing styles within one book is really impressive and all are executed beautifully - clearly David Mitshell is talented enough to write any genre he desires.

Three Men in a Boat & Three Men on the Bummel
by
Jerome, Jerome K.

Three Men In a Boat is a terrifically funny book, not in the "oh my gosh, he really said that!" sort of way but in a comfortable, observationally funny way. The narrator and his boatmates have no end of entertaining troubles and people on their journey but also poetic moments as well. Three Men on the Bummel is much the same with an added prophetic take on the German people and "His troubles will begin when by any chance something goes wrong with the governing machine." I wish I had known about this book when my mother was sick & wanted something fun to read.
