OK, I'm going to try this again --- the comment above should have 5 stars, not none. These are terrific socks.

Wonderstruck
by
Selznick, Brian
kjhellesen
, January 03, 2012
Brian Selznick blew up border between chapter books and picture books with "The Invention of Hugo Cabret." With "Wonderstruck," he took the book form he'd invented and created a deeper, ultimately more fascinating story. The saga of the deaf daughter of a silent film star is told all in gorgeous line drawings, the chapters interspersed with another story, a printed one, about a young boy in the 1970s trying to find his father. The richness of this book never stops: the period details (both eras), the look at the workings of the American Museum of Natural History ( with a nod to "From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler" ), the history of the Panorama of the City of New York, the information on the culture of the hearing impaired. Ultimately, the two stories weave together as each of the children discovers the joys of finding family. A book for any age, and one that can be read several times with new discoveries.
