Starr Creek
by
Nathan Carson
Dan Sauer

Having enjoyed Nathan Carson's short fiction (his stories in Ross Lockhart's Eternal Frankenstein and Joe Pulver's Madness of Dr. Caligari), I came to Starr Creek expecting a fun ride. I was not disappointed. Starr Creek is an imaginative and adrenaline-pumping novella punctuated with moments of powerful 80s nostalgia. I grew up in Oregon during the late 70s and early 80s, and many things in Starr Creek ring true for me. I wasn't into the drug scene, so I can't speak to that aspect, but Carson manages to capture the essence of what it was like to be a nerdy young boy or teenager in that era. Carson's prose is punchy and somewhat spartan, and he often caught me off guard with his unique way of phrasing things. Given the frantic pacing of this short book, I was impressed with how well the characters were developed. I won't say they were complex, but they were believable and (mostly) likable. The novella did seem a bit rushed to me, but this may be a feature rather than a bug. The unrelenting pace doesn't give the reader much time to ponder the meaning of events, and the spectacular climax may hit harder as a result.

Punktown
by
Jeffrey Thomas

Punktown is an exceptional collection of stories. Jeffrey Thomas blends science fiction, horror and cyberpunk in these tales. Though many of the stories are quite dark, Thomas brings his own particular brand of humanity to the most alien of his characters, and some of the tales are surprisingly hopeful. This was the first work by Jeffrey Thomas I've read, and I look forward to further exploration of Punktown and its infinitely interesting denizens.

The Cheat Code for God Mode
by
Andy De Fonseca

What a fun, strange book. The author starts her heroes out in an admirably strange world (rife with flying turtle bacon and 8-bit familiars) which only gets stranger as the story unfolds. At not quite 100 pages, Cheat Code is a fast read, but it's densely packed with thoughtful ruminations on the nature of existence. An adventure of ideas, if you will. As I progressed through the book, I was propelled along on wave after wave of references and jokes steeped in nerd culture and internet arcana... some of which I even understood! The scientific/astronomical aspect of Cheat Code was enjoyable as well. The compressed length of the book may have kept the story from reaching its true potential. But overall, I ended up feeling a bit light-headed while reading, which was probably due to the realization that ALL MY BASE ARE BELONG TO ANDY DE FONSECA.
