The Road
by
Cormac McCarthy

This grim book imagines the end of the world as we know it with gray skies, charred earth, and starving people struggling with basic details supporting life. Its philosophic queries focus the almost phantasmagoric setting and the relationship of one man and his son. One wonders whether this life-sustaining relationship would be possible.

Three Cups of Tea One Mans Mission to Promote Peace One School at a Time
by
Mortenson, Greg and Relin, David Oliver
mary marx
, March 03, 2007
This book features a real person who happens to be a man with a vision which might change history for Pakistanis, Afganis, and Americans. His efforts to truly help these Central Asian peoples by creating schools with their collaboration seem a most reasonable way to support peoples in difficulty. Helping people improve their lives through education seems a strong way to move away from a military solution to international difficulties. Specifically, it seems a reasonable way to counter the horrors of our era. Mortenson, through it all, is a real person with glaring faults. In spite of these, he has managed to make amazing contacts and friendships through his work in Central Asia. He has endured many difficult, even frightening situations. His family has managed to live through their fears for his welfare and to support his activities. This could be a sappy book, but is far from it! I recommend it to any person concerned about the current state of our world.

This book gives an account of history which is generally unknown in the U.S. The focus is on a man of great strength and ethic. Easwraran depicts him directly and simply.
