Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Fablehaven (Fablehaven #1)

As a huge fan of Children's Literature, I approached FABLEHAVEN without much hope. It was written by an American (not usually a good thing) he is young (usually a terrible thing) and it is his first book (three strikes against it before I opened the first page.) I couldn't have been more wrong. Fablehaven is a treat from the start, and so good, you will want to read it again as soon as you finish (which I'm doing.) Characters are believable and present day to the point you feel you've met them in line at a supermarket somewhere. The interaction between grandparent and grandchildren hasn't been done this well since Heidi. I won't ruin it for you by telling the tale, but you WILL be swept away. I am eager for the next book to come out, and absolutely thrilled that my sons loved it, read it themselves, and claimed to like it better than the previous family favorite, Harry Potter! Five stars are not enough for this wonderful, imaginative, multigenerational book.
