Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Don't be put off by the subject matter of "The Mirage" - it is a masterpiece of storylines that weave to form a story of conspiracy and culture. The detail that Ruff uses throughout the book is incredible, and the world he creates is one that you can actually see happening. He uses world history and events as a basis for an amazingly quick read. I highly recommend it!

Trip To The Stars

If you are looking for a "beach book", with simple characters and storyline, this is not the book for you. A Trip To The Stars is one of my all time favorite books. It starts with an little boy's kidnapping, impossible to fathom as a parent, and follows two people through life as they struggle to find normalcy and always wonder what happened to the other. Nicholas Christopher spends much time developing characters and discussing their history, and while to some this seems tedious, he has an amazing way of tying up loose ends as the book progresses. Each time I read this book, I encounter something new - a new character that didn't stand out before, a new storyline that I didn't follow the first time, or a new line that stands out as more meaningful this time around. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys books that take you deeper than expected, or for those of you who, like me, enjoy a book that gets better the more you return to it. Happy reading!

Incredible. I began reading knowing that it would start slow based on other reviews. Once it laid the foundation (maybe 5 chapters or so?), I could not put it down. This will be read over and over again to make sure I pick up on all the little details I probably missed the first time around.
