Just Kids

Patti Smith

I found this book very interesting in content since I lived in NYC and knew people just like the characters in the book. It was very well written and explains the era very well for those who did not live through it. Patti does not hold back on the life style that prevailed in the late 60's. Patti writes about her great friendship with Robert Maplethorpe, the photographer. They shared a warehouse where they painted together. She writes about Maplethorpes discovery that he was gay in a very sensitive manner. He eventually died of aids. She became a singer by accident-she really wanted to be a painter but singing did earn her money. I recently saw some her paintings on TV. This is a very honest book.

Burmese Lessons: A True Love Story
by
Karen Connelly
Nancy Hieronymus
, February 06, 2011
Karen Connelly writes beautifully about her journey to Burma to gather information about the brutal political system in Burma. She finds warm, loving people there and finds herself immersed in their political struggles. She interviews Aung San Suu Kyi. the opposition leader who has been detained in prison and her house. She witnesses demonstrations and protest meetings. She ends up in the Thai-Burmese border and meets Maung, a resistance leader, whom she falls in love with. She realizes she can not live this harsh life and so returns home. This book is filled with true, high adventure and tells the hard, sad tale of the Burmese people.

Stealing Fatima
by
Frank X. Gaspar

, January 04, 2011
This is a beautifully written story about the Portuguese working class in Provincetown, MA. A statue of Our Lady of Fatima, is stolen from the church that Father Manny Furtado is in charge of. He is a good man but addicted to drink and drugs due to the pain he suffers. The story of the statue unfolds and we are kept in suspense until the end. There are many interesting characters in this book and they work out their personal problems along with Father Furtado.
