Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Down the Nile Alone in a Fishermans Skiff
by
Rosemary Mahoney

I am not a rowing enthusiast but I did like the idea of following ROsemary Mahoney, a single woman trying to make her way through Egypt to fulfill a goal of rowing down the Nile on her own, in a predominantly male dominated society. Being American, her brashness probably kept her going where a native-born woman would have given up but it is clear that she had a great adventure - kind of like a mini-Tahir Shah-type expedition, and she met some fascintating characters on the way. I liekd it so much I now have another book of hers, WHoredom in Kimmage on the way!

Sickened The Memoir Of A Munchausen By P
by

I just finished reading this book and found it to be very powerful. Now a grown-up, Julie goes back to her childhood and describes what is was like to live with a mentally ill, manipulative mother who suffered from Munchausen by Proxy. Julie detail her memories of all the medical procedures she underwent needlessly and how her mother manipulated her child to be an unwilling but necessary partner. Only when Julie grew up and escaped was she able to fully accept what it was like to be a victim of Munchausen by Proxy. I was just sorry the book had to end, I would have liked to have learned more about how Julie's life turned out, and that of her family.

Strange Piece Of Paradise Return To Amer
by

Amazing story about a woman who tried to "push down" the fact that when she was in college in 1977 someone tried to murder her by running her over with a truck and chopping her with an ax while she was biking across country. She goes back to the "scene of the crime" and digs and digs to find answers, ultimately to find herself looking in the face of the man who tried to murder her friend and her.
